Then what black magic shit is my computer doing? I have noticed zero loss of performance on my machine since I made it. I do not optimise it in any way.

I am going to put it down to you use your computer like a netbook. Alternatively, you should start a lecture series on how you use your computer so the rest of us can benefit.

Or y'know, come back to this thread in 3 months and tell me your boot time is still 20s. I will happily eat a hat if that happens.

While I'm not the biggest "power user", I definitely use matlab, latex compilers and now photoshop routinely. But sure, 3 months time I'll run the clock on my comp and we'll see :P

Looks like the makers themselves acknowledge this issue. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Optimize-Windows-7-for-better-performance

I'm getting a 404 on that link :P

Maybe my OS is self-aware and is trying to keep me from finding out this information because the optimisation programs actually kill its sentience :O

Also, to clarify, if you refer to "boot time" as the time it takes from power on to displaying the desktop, this time remains relatively unchanged. Even on my shitty WD Green boot I get ~30s. I am referring to the time it takes for the computer to become useable. If you wish to be technical, I specify this to be when CPU usage + disk utilization are both below 30%. (I use a startup manager to notify me when this happens and I can start using the system.)

Well now you're just going and changing the rules on me.

My definition is my icons have loaded and are ready to use. Dunno about cpu usage < 30%.

Well, when icons have just been loaded, the system is still laggy. If there is lag between me pressing the Chrome button and the chrome window loading, I get real mad.

So anyways, this kind of problems went away after I bought a SSD, which shows Windows might still be useable.

How do we know if we've got the virus (I'm on a Mac now)?
The virus inevitably infects your Mac at random. At any point in time after the conception of the virus, you are simultaneously infected and clean.
It's really not that hard to quantify..., but I believe that being raped once is not as bad as being raped five times, even if the one rape was by a gang of people.
