Do girls perform in the VCE better than guys?

When I say "perform better" I mean do they obtain a better ATAR score in year 12 generally speaking?

I've been looking around at the statistics and it seems as though the proportion of female:male at Victorian unis is actually a bit high. i.e. the proportion of women studying is greater at most Victorian unis than the proportion of guys.

But why is this?
Are girls just smarter and more hard working than guys?
Most of the students who obtain <50 atar are guys right?

Why is this???

I read somewhere that the average ATAR for girls is higher but at the top level, there are more boys. Pretty sure it was in a newspaper article.
Aspiring doctor. Why? For the same four reasons as everybody else. Chicks, money, power and chicks.

Women mature earlier than men, they're better at prioritizing at that age. But I doubt the gender difference is really thaaat significant, it's not substantially imbalanced

Just comes down to the individual. You get what you put. Statistically it shows that females do better than males in VCE but those statistics could change any year. Like that one year where Melbourne High did better than MacRob(not that this is just based on the two schools). They just had a lot of hardworking students that year. Unless someone can find some research to prove females perform than males in VCE.

^I object, kevin, I is MHS represent.

If we even the playing field, Melbourne High would've come on top of MacRob every single year. The reason? Macrob has only 250 ish students each year, while Melbourne High has 350 ish. Take out the bottom 100, and MHS's median and average ATAR would trump Macrob's.

But it would appear that overall, statistics have shown that girls do perform better in high school scores worldwide (not just VCE) than guys. It's been said already in this topic, it's because girls are more mature than guys overall at this age, hence they are more motivated to get better scores.

I don't think using MHS and Macrob in this debate as microcosm for the bigger picture of VCE  in this debate is wise.

Boys do better at the top end; just out of those who got 99.95, (34) only 1/3 were girls. And I'm pretty sure that's a theme throughout the 99s.

I remember a teacher of mine saying, that boys generally spend more time procrastinating and complaining about homework and assignments than girls. We apparently get straight to it, and leave the rest for later.
Just an opinion.

Girls have ridiculous amounts of self-discipline.

I get home and see the glowing DotA 2 icon on my desktop and suddenly nothing in the world matters anymore...

I think thats true in most aspects of life: Girls do better on average, whereas you find more males at either extreme

Maybe girls are better at humanities that aren't scaled as generously as maths and science subjects that boys tend to do well in.
