How do you study more effectively.

I hear people say all the time that uni is not about studying harder, but studying more efficiently.
Any strategies or tips on how to study efficiently?

Manage your time effectively, spend time on different topics, etc, etc...

‎"We divert our attention from disease and death as much as we can; and the slaughter-houses and indecencies without end on which our life is founded are huddled out of sight and never mentioned, so that the world we recognize officially in literature and in society is a poetic fiction far handsomer and cleaner and better than the world that really is."

Active learning versus passive learning; Elaborative Rehearsal > Maintanence Rehearsal; connecting new concepts to what you already know; all that stuff.

What would ineffective study be, by the way? Just wondering.
I always look a little lost.

^ When you try to study, but it doesn't happen  :).

WHY? Because of facebook, sms / phone friends, DOTA 2 / Starcraft / sleep / other consoles / etc etc. Or too much Nintendo 64.

Prepare early but don't cram, cramming is a good way to forget not remember and that's a fact. dilks's advice making use of psychology terms now I really like that :). So yeah dilks's advice will help to, believe me elaborative rehearsal is a good way to remember unlike cramming.

If you are visual like some of us, make mind maps! They worked so well for me this semester, I even took a picture of them on my phone so I dont waste my train rides on looking at my feet. I'm doing science so this really did it for me.

Otherwise form study groups, and get each of your study group member to revise over a specific topic in your course then each person has to go through the material , in depth, whilst the rest of you ask questions or make notes on what to focus on etc etc.. so we spend more time researching every topic, and instead clarify it with a person who spent more time on one topic.. This is what my study group did, its quite efficient/effective.  :)

Also cut the internet so you can study with the computer or you'll procrastinate by posting on threads...-.-'

Actually, that's the mots efficient type of studying.  Though not the most effective.

Ditto, I already said that it's a good way to forget. I don't ever do it although maybe I did it once or twice but rarely.

i don't know, for science and math, i just learn the theory and do the questions. i find explaining it to someone or talking to yourself helps consolidate what i've learnt. actually, i just talk to myself and it still helps a lot.

ineffective? like kyzoo said, supercram before the assessments lol

oh yeah, and try to do a bit of each subject everyday. in my opinion, it's better to do 30 minutes of a something each day rather than leave it all to the weekend and have a huge session cause it keeps the concepts fresh in your mind and lets it sink in
