I got mine from Rebel, dumbbell, barbell and 50kg of weights. It is expensive, try ebay. They would be cheapest

If you want to go really cheap you could always fill bottles (big ones, like 3L milk bottles) with water and put them into bags (reusable shopping bags, backpacks etc.) and use them as weights. You'd be limited as to what you could do with them, but still, better than nothing.

Looking for used stuff on eBay is a good option too.

Personally, I bought most of my plates from Lifespan Fitness. I got them in a pack like this which turned out to be pretty good value.

It may seem like a huge expenditure, but for about as much as a years worth of gym membership, you could get yourself some pretty nice equipment that you'd be able to use for many, many years.

Points for creativity. Never thought of the water in a bottle idea.
I use a home gym and weights purchased from Rebel.

Real pricey.

Try ebay or smaller stores. Since they're so heavy, you wont be getting them shipped out. You'll have to go pick them up so you can probably pay in cash.

I got a 57kg set for about 70 bucks (cant remember the exact price, had them for awhile).

i started with a home gym, barbells/dumbells and an all in one pec fly/lat pulldown/smith/pullups etc.

I lost motivation so quickly, and got bored of it. i didnt know if i was on the right track, if my nutrition was in check (hell no it wasnt) and if my form was right (LOL) and whether or not i had the right routine going (i dont even wanna think about that). I would highly highly highly recommend joining a gym. if you pay for it yourself, you WILL make use of it (if youre anything like me), and if you sign up for a long time (say, a year) then you WILL achieve your goals. you wont give up half way through. and if you have to physically leave the house to do it, you'll put in a lot more effort than if you just had to go into the garage to work out.

If you dont really think you need all that, cos youre just getting started, you will kick yourself in the face in 2 years' time, cos you'll feel like you wasted all the previous time working out (2 years is a long time to lose).

which suburb do you live in dunherro? I might be able to recommend some good places (maybe, depending on where you live)

hey if you join a gym with group exercise classes they are great! i go to a class called 'body pump' quite often which is a high rep weights class! you do about 800 reps in a hour. and you get results fast as well! and as babes said, when you pay for it yourself you actually are motivated to go! dont want to waste my money. now if only my diet was good so i could see better results haha!
what a year it has been, thank goodness it is over, bring on a new chapter!
