State Library

Hi guys -

I know a lot of you study at the state library and I was wondering if you had any views on making it even better - ie more public access areas, more exhibitions, etc.
Or do you guys just go in there for a quiet place to work?
Why do you go to the State Library?

Yes, this is for a school assignment.

Thanks for your views!

I've never been to the state library... Melbourne is too far for me to travel, unless it's a special occasion.

Longer opening hours would be good.

The state library is great, but around exams it's packed pretty much all the time - I'd say it's better going to a university library or just your local one. I do 90% of my study at my local library, and it's so much better than state, simply because it's closer to home and there's more space for me to spread my books everywhere!

State library is good because of their
central facility which is easy to access
Their wifi is also pretty good.
Its generally quiet, which helps unlike public librarys and school librarys when occasionally there will be kids, babies, kids who are disruptive

Some of the cons:
Lots of people - hard to find seats
You probaly will bump into people you know and get distracted
Lockers - you have to pay
Gets busy

Hope this helped

It would be nice if SLV stayed open later, especially on weekends. Also would be nice if the security at the entrance weren't so anal about bag size allowed through; it's not like taking everything out of the bag and seeing if it fits in the measuring device exactly proves whether it is obstructive or not.

Grrrrr... This basically wrecked my whole experience of going there single-handedly.

pros:
- seats are very comfortable and some tables have a lot of space to dump your stuff on
- generally very quiet (depends where you're studying) and has a very "academic" atmosphere to it
- great to have a break by going to MC with a friend or 2 for lunch
- wifi and printing are accessible

cons:
-anal security - one guard thought my orange juice pencil case was an actual carton of orange juice and I had to show him the pencils inside it to prove that it was a pencil case, guards go nuts if you eat a mandarin inside, bag restrictions... once I had a bag that was slightly bigger than the frame thing they have and I was told to either buy a locker hire or to find another library. Maybe they do their job well but the bag thing really ticked me off :\
-no seats, but first come first serve?
-you will see uni and VCE kids all finding each other and having small convos in a few areas which could annoy some
-closing times

I think the trading hours are really good.
No public or school library would open from 10-9pm from Mon - Thurs
and Fri - Sun 10-6

My public library opens only 2 days which they open until 8pm, they usually would close at 6
And only weekends they open from 11-5

It's good for studying, I especially like the quiet area.

The one thing I hate is that "some" people just end up staring at you for no apparent reason . It's very exasperating. Some people learn in a different ways to others. Not my fault I like highlighting everything in so many different colours.

that one asian dude there, I took my books out of my school bag in front of him and forced my bag into that little hole thing, he said I had to carry it through with my books in my hand, so I went through and put it back straight in my bag immediately and now ever since he gives me shifty looks.

Don't ever pay for a locker unless you seriously have alot of junk, a little bit more freedom and longer opening hours would be awesome, sometimes you can find yourself walking around in circles looking for a seat, other then that its a good environment and you can be very productive there, I never bring my laptop so work always gets done!
