2012 VCAA ADP + PI ---> ATP (phosphorylation)
« on: June 12, 2012, 05:09:02 pm »
There was a MC on the 2012 VCAA that asked where the energy source for this reaction came from? I put sunlight because that energy can make ATP in the light dependent reactions of photosynthesis and also provide energy for glucose which is broken down to make more ATP....so the original energy source is sunlight..... right?  :-\

HELL YES!  ;D It was getting towards the end of MC and usually they get harder so I wasn't 100%, but with my logic I worked it out to be sunlight!

Yeah, that's what I thought too.

No, sunlight is the ultimate source of energy for ALL cells. Glucose is the intermediate.

You must remember in the light dependent reaction of photosynthesis doesn't use glucose for phosphorylation. It didn't say it was an animal cell, it didn't even say it was in the mitochondria or the cytosol. It also didn't say it was in a plant cell, or the chloroplasts. So it is talking in general about the original source of energy.

I find it ironic how checking my MCQ led me to lose marks

Looks like VCAA likes to really link their questions to overall concepts. this is on the vcaa bio study design:

Quote
energy transformations, including main stages in and sites of photosynthesis and cellular
respiration; ATP-ADP cycle; factors affecting rate of energy transformations;

The whole cycle from sun to newly synthesised organic biomacromolecules, including sugars and fats, to cellular processes requiring energy with adp phosphorylation etc is like linked up in that question.

It asked for the 'original' source of energy so I chose the sun

And also with the 1st SA on the structure X, what did you pick. It looked sort of defined and rigid so I chose cell wall, but heaps of people chose cell membrane, what did you pick and why?

I chose cell membrane. It had a clear showing of the bi-layer, and the cell was zoomed in a LOT. The nucleus was HUGE on the side. It could not have been the cell wall IMO.

I chose a cell membrane...if it was a cell wall there should have been two clear lines so that both the cell membrane and cell wall could be identified, but I could only see one!

I circled sunlight then when the examiner said 5 minutes to go, i rubbed it out and circled glucose.................
Is plasma membrane the same thing as cell membrane?

Bad luck.
Yes.
