Ninwa, I think you're missing my point though, you might think it's
fair that their futures are ruined, but the thing is, unless the cycle is broken, they're likely to have kids which they can't raise properly because they're stuck doing menial jobs meaning that their kids are more likely to get involved in crime as well, meaning that their grandkids might be affected and it's an ongoing cycle. Punishing them has no tangible effect, we need to help them break out of their idiocy. Secondly, just because they act that way doesn't mean their parents are bad, sometimes I've seen truly good parents with kids who are idiots, but it's not the parents' fault, they just don't know what their kids get up to.
Did you listen to what the kids said to her? I take my hat off to, applaud and praise her endlessly for her ability to remain cool for the ENTIRE 10 minutes, in which the kids literally do not stop taunting her. At all.
I applaud her too, but it still doesn't mean that the kids should be subjected to vigilante justice by the members of the public. We're basing what we think is fair or not based on a Youtube video, what do we even know about the situation of what has happened? We can't just go around committing vigilante justice, it doesn't help anything.
Maybe watch the whole video? The extent of the crime is actually the most relevant aspect of the crime when determining how it should be punished. If they had made one off-hand, "your fat" comment then of course it would be unfair. Ten minutes of the some of the rudest hate I've ever witnessed is worthy of a much greater punishment. I think you'll find that in modern legal systems, the degree of punishment is determined by the extent of the crime
.
Irrespective of whether or not they deserve it, the internet is not "controllable"... there's nothing we could do to stop the video going viral OR people working out who they are. These kids will learn that actions have consequences the hard way, and hopefully others will learn from that and not follow in their footsteps.
It's rude, but I wouldn't say that it's the rudest hate I've ever witnessed, I've seen worse things multiple times. You're right, the degree of punishment is determined by the extent of the crime, but it is also determined by other factors such as the circumstances of the crime, the situation of the perpetrators amongst other things. But, and it's a big but, we are not the legal system, therefore, we can't make judgements. The internet is not controllable, you're right, and of course there's nothing we can do, but I don't think they should learn the hard way, don't you feel any sympathy for the kids? How would you feel if you made a mistake 10 years ago, and had to pay for with the rest of your life?
There is a reason why the media is not allowed to release name of underage criminals you know That is to protect them and their future. Don't you think there is a reason for that?
To sum up, look at the extent of their crime, it's verbal harassment, nothing more, emotions aside, looking at it objectively, it is just that. There are far worse crimes that happen every day, people getting bashed up at train stations late at night, people being discriminated against in the workforce, dangerous drivers putting other road users at risk, look at all those situations, situations where people's lives are at risk, do they get 80,000 dollars in compensation?
In all honesty, this crime is bad, but surely it is not as bad as some of the others I have listed, the only reason this is big is because it's an internet sensation evoking people's sympathy.
