At Melbourne science is 90 and biomedicine is  a minimum of 95
At Monash science is 80 and biomedicine is 93

This is from the top of my head, you can just check on their websites...

Is there any advantage to doing biomed as opposed to science, or are you just paying for the name? :S I've always wondered this
2012-2014. BSc: Neuroscience. University of Melbourne.
2015-2018. Doctor of Optometry. University of Melbourne.

Unlikely to respond to any PMs these days.

There is only 1 major you can do in biomed that you can't do in science, apart from that it's the same.
I think it's mainly because name though, because it has 'medicine' in it.
I wonder if post-grad studies (med, dent, etc) prefer students from bio-med over science..

From what I hear there is no preference, however most are taken from biomed, followed by monash biomed and then science at unimelb. (I saw on a thread here a while ago). What's the major out of curiosity?

I mean, if anything you can probably get easier H1s in science where you can choose your subjects :S

I feel that a lot of people do it because it has a higher ATAR cut and people don't want to "waste" their ATARs. A secondary reason might be that it has a higher "rate" of successful MD applicants, but I think that's because of the higher ATAR kids in there in the first place.

Is it just me or is the topic title and the opening post completely unrelated?

Science or BioMed at Melbourne - that's a very broad question, especially given that you haven't told us anything else about what you want to do.

ATAR Requirements - you can find this out in the VTAC guide

From what I hear there is no preference, however most are taken from biomed, followed by monash biomed and then science at unimelb. (I saw on a thread here a while ago). What's the major out of curiosity?

This is purely because BioMed tends to be a stronger cohort than Science - hence, more of them will get into MD

"Wasting" your ATAR is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, I can't believe people think like that, I know someone who got a good ATAR (around 89) and he's in TAFE doing Electrotechnology and becoming an Electrician because he wants to. Respect for him.

Perhaps too because science has things like engineering, and other majors too, whereas biomed is mainly focused on health sciences/ biomed engineering.

I agree with paulsterio that wasting your atar is stupid, but it actually happens.

This, it happens a lot. I know a fair few people who are doing Biomed at Melb or Law at Monash for this reason.
