That, and the writing style is quite vapid.
That seems to be the case with quite a few of the 'high-scoring responses' published in VCAA Assessment Reports, across all subjects. Any idea why?
Anything that is too stylistically sophisticated is going to scare the average student away, basically. Imagine how most kids in the state are going to feel if you show them an essay that talks about "ideological apotheoses" and "the zenith and triumph of the human condition" consistently, and then tell them that this is a model essay written by somebody their age.
In all seriousness, that's what scared me away from Lit. I was quite the stylistically vapid writer myself. My writing style was like "Topic sentence. Logical pathway. Examples and commentary. Link." No element of stylistic sophistication. But I guess in English Language they didn't really care about stylistics that much, so long as what was said was clear; they looked more at your arguments and the logic.
And when you're competing against the likes of brightsky, who, when he was Year 10, proceeded to shred one of my essays to pieces the week before my exam in giving me feedback, there's a reason I did not dare touch Lit.
