Can someone please explain what the 'average value of f(x)' is used for, in integration? And what does it actually give, like 'the average value' of what?

"The average value of a function" is just a fancy name (and a result of) for the mean value theorem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mean_value_theorem)
