does literature help your mainstream english?

I've got an extra slot to fill for my year 11 subjects, so i have to pick a 1/2 subject that I (most likely) wont do the 3/4 for. Will choosing literature help my English 1/2 & 3/4? Or is it another separate branch of english?
Thanks.

For sure. Develops your writing style and teaches you the art of language analysis, which is worth one-third of your exam mark. I've found it helps with all essay writing/short answer expression. Plus you also spend a year analysing texts and creating your own ideas, which I think is a pretty invaluable academic skill.

That being said, only one member of my year 11 Lit 3/4 class from last year is actually doing well (90% average) in English 3/4 this year.

Definitely! At my school I'm one of six or so year elevens in  yr 12 lit, and, regardless of how we are faring in lit, we're killing 1/2 English.
( If you do the 1/2 you might fall in love with lit anyway and decide to continue :D )

I'm picking subjects for year 11 at the moment too. I wasnt really sure whether I wanted to put down lit, so I asked my teacher and he told me to put it down because they compliment each other.

Not to mention that if you screw up one 3/4 sequence that you have a back up! Would definitely recommend that anyone who is good at english to do both English and lit!
