Is a gap year a good idea?

im thinking about taking a gap year after year 12? I think it will be good getting a break from study and traveling a bit, work some. Whoever has taken a gap year is it worth it?
im hoping it wont slow my thinking down or anything so im not rusty for uni :-\

i haven't had one but i was thinking about taking one. I think its only worth taking a gap year if you intend to travel, otherwise the gap between end of yr 12 and uni is more than enough. When Uni does start you'll be more than happy to start studying again.

He's right. I finished 3rd week of November, went travelling for a month, came back on New years and was bored to death. Uni doesnt start till March you know....

I think its only worth taking a gap year if you intend to travel
or if you're planning to work full time, or at least enough to build up a decent amount financially.

Two of my good friends took a gap year.
One did it to concentrate on his music - and now he's going around performing in clubs and releasing EPs.
The other one went into full time work, bought her own car, paid for herself to travel overseas, and is saving up for a house atm. She has also started studying part time. That's another option for you - work something close to full time study part time through distance education. Only downside is you pretty much miss out on all the social life uni brings.
