Clarification Of Exam!

Hey guys, I've been going through the year with the impression that we have to do working out for every question in exam 2. Only recently i found out that the other classes teacher, spends majority of her time on working everything out on the CAS calc, whereas we do things manually and spend a bit of time on the calc.

Can you just put the CAS steps for working out to get marks where more than one are allocated?

for example: Do i need to know how to work out simulatanous equations manually, or do i just need to know how to do it on the CAS? and for exam two do i put down my working out as:  solve(blah blah (IF THEY ASK)

I guess you just have to use common sense and go one question at a time. For example, if a question that requires you to use simultaneous equations and is only worth 2 marks, then only the answers of the two variables are required. But if was worth say 3 or 4 marks, then you need to show working. That doesnt mean you cant use your calculator to aid you with your working, although you dont need to write down the calculator steps because the assessors know that every kid is using them. You should really familiarise yourself with the assessment reports and really get to know which type of questions require which type of working. You should get to the point where you automatically know how to set out an answer for each question without thinking, because in further, the same questions come up.

Do not use calculator notation on the exam.

The general method is "setup" and "solve".

So using the simultaneous equations example, set them up by hand, then solve them using a CAS.

oh okay,

so basically I should know how to attempt questions in linear relations algebraically, and use a calculator to verify the answer if a 3-4 mark question arises? and for two mark questions I can use solve on the calculator?

Thanks by the way, I don't know why my other VCE maths teacher thought it was absurd that we exerting emphasis on learning equations algebraically, She said "Examiners expect you to be using and doing everything on the CAS and not algebra, algebra is for subjects like methods"...

For questions worth one mark, writing the answer will suffice. However, for questions worth more than one mark, some level of "working out" must be shown (generally a formula will suffice). The Further course relies heavily on the use of the CAS calculator, particularly if you're doing the Business Maths module. In fact, writing a table of what you enter into the Finance Solver is actually considered as "working out" in this instance.
