Applying to interstate universities for MBBS/Dent

Hey guys,

So I'm going to be applying to every interstate university that offers undergraduate Medicine and Dentistry.

In terms of applications, do I need to do it through their equivalent of VTAC?

I was looking at some universities last night and it looks as though I may need to and I was just wondering whether I can only put down 1-2 courses depending on how many universities in their state offer Med/Dent. I'm not interested in studying anything except Med/Dent interstate. (with the exception of PPE/JD at ANU).

Can anyone offer any advice for applications etc?

Thanks!

Yes, you do need to apply to interstate universities via their respective versions of VTAC. They are very very similar, just with small differences in their charges and the (maximum) limit of how many you can apply to. There is no minimum limit, so yes, you can definitely just apply for one or two universities per state.

Yep, what Menang said, however, furthermore, some unis require you to submit a written application as well and that is done either through the uni site (UNSW comes to mind here) or by downloading a form and mailing it to them (JCU comes to mind). You need to both apply through their VTAC equivalent AND fill in the form to be eligible.

Great, thanks very much for your help, guys. I really hope to have strong written applications to the universities that require them as I feel as though this will really assist me.

At this point in time, all of my hope is invested in JCU MBBS. I'm fairly confident that I'll be able to write a decent application. Just have to work my butt off to get an ATAR of 98 and work on interview skills.

Out of curiosity, do you do spesh and/or a LOTE and/or a uni subject?

If not, make sure your aim is 99+ and you should be fine :)

My mistake, confused UQ and JCU around. Ignore info.

EDIT: THE BELOW IS FOR UQ, NOT JCU, APOLOGIES.

how does the scaling system work Vege?

Best worded from the QTAC site:
Quote
The University of Queensland Bonus Rank Scheme awards bonus points towards an entry rank for passing an approved language other than English (LOTE), (two points); passing the Queensland Studies Authority course Maths C (or equivalent as determined by UQ); (two points); and/or successful completion of a university level course at university concurrent with a Senior program (one point).  This scheme does not apply to applications for scholarships. This scheme applies to domestic and international students completing an internal Australian Year 12 program in the year of application, including the International Baccalaureate and Australian citizens completing an approved secondary program overseas which is assessed as equivalent to Queensland Senior. The maximum number of bonus points that a student can receive under any UQ scheme is capped at five.

So for example:
eg1) You got 99 ATAR (OP1) and did spesh, you won't get any bonus points (2 max available due to doing spesh) to your ATAR as you are already at OP1 level
eg2) You got 95 ATAR but did spesh and a LOTE, you'd be a 99 ATAR applicant in UQ's eyes as you would get 2+2=4 bonus points.

Just putting it out there, but the OP system is complete rubbish!

But yeah, apparently some QLD universities use the ATAR now, instead of the OP system to consider medicine entry because it's just not fair that 99.00 and 99.95 is "the same".

Yeah, it's pretty dodgy. But then again, QLD's education on the whole is a bit strange with all their internal assessments (unless it's changed).

That's alright, just try and get 99+ plus though to scrape that OP1 :)

I don't know much about QLD's education, so can't comment.

But Surgeon, yeah, I agree with pi, you really have to get an OP1 to be competitive for entry into Medicine, because I don't think OP2 would be high enough :(
