The Kerbal Space Program Thread

It seems like everyone's pretty stressed out about VCE/Uni at the moment, and what we all really need is some video game therapy!  I was talking to Cthulhu on IRC lately and that reminded me to get you guys into it!

Kerbal Space Program
What is KSP?

Basically, Kerbal Space Program is a game where you can design and launch rockets.

You're given a plethora of parts, a capable crew of three (know as Kerbals), and a basic staging process that allows you to launch parts when they need to be :D

What are the objectives or goals in the game?

There's no real defined goals, so it's great if you can make your own.
For instance my goals have been
- Getting a ship into space (DONE! :D)
- Getting a ship to stay in a non-decaying Orbit (DONE! :D)
- Getting a ship to the moon (not done, I came close but I missed the moon ): )

Where can I get it/is it free?

The demo is free (and isn't too different than the paid version) and can be downloaded from the link below.

How can I claim to my curry/asian parents that this is beneficial for my education?
Well it is Rocket Science (or in my case, trial and error).

You should be able to show to your parents the calculations you use to find Planetary Phase Angles (the angle two planets should have to each other, maintaining the angle from one planet with the sun as a vertex)

Which can be given by,

Additionally, even some parts of VCE Physics comes into it (don't tell pi) namely, Keplers Third Law!  Which we should know will allow you to calculate the mass of Kerblin without knowing much else.

Do I have to do the math?

It's up to you, I'm personally not doing the Maths and taking a more trial and error approach (many Kerbalers were harmed)

Moderator action: removed real name, sorry for the inconvenience

KSP is incredible. Do you know how the demo holds up? I don't want to pay 18 bucks for a game I'll be infatuated with for a weekend.
It's really not that hard to quantify..., but I believe that being raped once is not as bad as being raped five times, even if the one rape was by a gang of people.

Do you realise that if you pay $18 now, you will receive all future updates and then the actual game for free?
I payed $15 for 0.15, and the price will increase with each new update.

The demo is 0.13 IIRC, so there has been some additions since and I've heard that the mechanics have been a bit more finely tuned.  Additionally with 0.16 (current version) you're able to find mods and plugins, I'm just using the satellite mod as we speak which can increase the playtime by a bit. It's less than $20, a movie ticket is about that much and you'll only really get 2 hours or so of entertainment out of it opposed to the >2 hours you could play this for.  I've got about 60 hours on it playing on and off from each update. :)

You'll also get a lot of future updates, which the next version is adding in a rudimentary form of multiplayer.
