their good expect for section 2. Also does anyone know if you can still do research with a MBBS degree because that is an avenue I might take.

Yes, that's definitely an option. You can also do research in your degree too (different program depending on your course).

You'll get into Medicine, but based on your interests (and keenness for medicine) why not biomed/science?

because i don't want to run the risk of studying extremely hard for another 3 years and then still not getting into medicine. And if i don't get into medicine from biomed i'd have no idea of what i'd go into

Dont do law unless you have a passion for it - it is a dicipline where you cannot logically think your way through a problem. As aus. is governed by a common law system; where decisiona pf courts are based on either findings of past cases or from statute; you will be spending most of your time just studying old court cases and complex statutes for the exams. If you cannot picture yourself doing that...well you get the picture.

Is it possible to go from comm undergrad at melb into med postgrad? That way if i can't get in i've got a useful degree, if i can, i'll work hard to catch up to go into my number 1 course

Also do i need to select particular breadth subjects to leave the option of JD open?

Not a clue for med, but you don't need any breadth subjects for the JD.

because i don't want to run the risk of studying extremely hard for another 3 years and then still not getting into medicine. And if i don't get into medicine from biomed i'd have no idea of what i'd go into

Biomedical engineering, teaching, physiotherapy, dentistry, speech pathology, optometry, JD...etc.

There is no shortage of pathways for you to go, if you can't find something else in that list that you would be interested in, I don't think you're opening your eyes enough.

And oh, I don't understand, so you expect to get into medicine from Year 12 but you aren't willing to take the risk, effort and time to do graduate medicine, well, that truly shows your dedication to wanting to do medicine, and I'd like to see you say, at your interview, when posed with the question, "if you don't get into medicine what will you do" - "i will go into commerce/law because i don't want to take the risk of doing graduate medicine".

That's a really fair point, and in reality, could come up in an MMI (used for both the Monash MBBS and the UoM MD). Worth thinking about a genuine answer to this.

Well for me, the answer I gave was (and this was truthful btw)

1) Take a gap year and try to re-sit the UMAT and improve on my non-academic skills (so building up a good CV - doing volunteer work...etc.)
2) If still unsuccessful, do a Bachelor of Science and then try to go through the graduate entry pathway - at UoM, Monash, Notre Dame, Deakin as well as consider interstate
3) If still unsuccessful, do a Masters or Diploma of Education and become a teacher (you could just replace this with any other career you want - dentistry, optometry...etc. but it's good to have something that is related to medicine).

Do you not know your UMAT score at the time of interview?

You know it, although I'm not sure if you know your ATAR or not (I don't think you do at that stage - first round).

Pretty sure you need a health science related degree (along with the pre-req subjects required by melb) in order to be admitted to melb md. Well according to the vtac guide.

You don't need any specific degree, you just need second year subjects in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry - although it would help, I presume, to do other medical subjects as well.

Fair point paul. For me it's a risk concern. If someone said work your a*** off for 3 or 4 years and you can become a doctor i'd take that no problem. However you have to weigh risk against reward. Not willing to accept a high degree of risk doesn't mean i don't truly want to do medicine. Also in my personal scenario my options are limited (med condition), or else i would definitely go interstate if i didn't get into monash. And i wont be ready to go to gippsland / geelong by myself by the time biomed is over, so the inherent risk is increased for myself personally compared to others. And yes from that list there are some things i definitely wouldn't mind doing (teaching for e.g.) it's about comparing whether i'd rather teach or go into commerce. I reasonably enjoy commerce and would prefer it over teaching as a profession. So yes i definitely see you're point, and it's perfectly valid, but it's not that straightforward a decision.

Man you got a 50 in Biology in year 11 and will get a ridiculously high ATAR. So long as you don't completely slack off in university, I'm certain you'll get into the MD course.

If you're so motivated to study medicine and want to become a doctor, you wouldn't slack off in the 3 years preceding entrance into the MD, anyway.
Aspiring doctor. Why? For the same four reasons as everybody else. Chicks, money, power and chicks.
