MC Question 36

So I just got my statement of results and had a quick look at which ones I got wrong, I can understand why for each one except for Q36.

I don't have the actual question booklet but from memory we were given a scenario where there were participants in two experiments, one testing their rate of forgetting on nonsense syllables and the other on the rate of forgetting of names. The question said something like 'The rate of forgetting on the test would be...' and I answered A (the same as for the nonsense syllables).

Even the Connect Education suggested answers said the same and I'm a bit confused why it was in fact B because although they may remember more, I thought the RATE of forgetting would always be the same?

FYI I'm not too fussed over it, just curious to see if anyone could explain :)

Yeah I don't really get why it's B either, we were talking about it in the OFFICIAL RESULTS THREAD. The Connect Ed lecturer is writing to VCAA about it so hopefully we can get the mark back (although it's pretty unlikely).

hopefully they remove it.. given they had an almost identical question on last year's midyear. I also remember Roger Edwards specifically saying that rate is different to amount in his revision lecture.

if it's B, how do you even chunk names anyway?

@shaiga95 I don't have the other options sorry, once the exam is uploaded we should be able to see. I think the so called 'correct' answer was that the rate of forgetting was slower than for the nonsense syllables, which makes no sense to me as it was drilled into our class that the RATE always remains the same, although there can be differing amounts remembered? Like the participants could have remembered 13 names and only 5 nonsense syllables but the RATE of forgetting would have still been the same for both..

@ktrah Ohhh thanks I'll have a look in that thread, yeah I doubt we will get it back this late but hopefully they can just cancel a mark out or something

@aaackk exactly! I had a lecture with him too and remember him saying that. I think the idea with the names isn't to do with chunking but more-so to do with attaching semantic meaning, like you might know people with those names and therefore might be able to remember them better.. not sure though.
