What are the benefits of doing a double degree?

All i can think of is that if you can't find a job with one of your degrees, you can look for one with the other. And that some employers might find a double degree more attractive. Any other benefits?

Hard work pays off. If you don't think so, you're not working hard enough.

Yea that is pretty much it. It is quite amazing how it isn't as rewarding considering the amount of study that is required for a 2nd degree.

^Should do Law degree combined with another degree. Almost nobody (except a few) do only just the Law undergrad degree. The most common is Commerce/Law, followed by Arts/Law. But i've known people who do Biomed/Law and Sci/Law.

Then there's crazy kids who do MBBS/Law....

Btw, this is Monash Uni info.

But does it provide me with any benefits in the real world? I would be studying for 5 years...and I don't want it all for nothing.

It's flexible. Say if you do law/commerce, you can go into law practices. Let's say you work there a few years, and you want to switch to finance roles instead. You can do that with your degree. Nice and easy, no?

For an Arts/Law degree you could major in a language, which would be a great advantage in certain fields, i.e. working for the UN, international law or diplomacy.
A Science/Law course would be useful if you are planning to enter patent law, I'm not really aware of any other benefits of that degree; except for the opportunity it gives to study something you really enjoy, while only adding one year to your degree.

Say one does not get into undergrad med at monash
would biomed at UoM be better, or a double degree from Monash in Biomed ( i heard its not the same as Uom's biomed ? in content? ) with commerce/engineering ?

^Wait, don't most double degree with law take 5 years? Oh btw, if you do commerce / law it's obvious you can go into corporate law firms, like Clayton Utz or something.

To answer you, Bhootnike, I'm just going to say: if you're really passionate for med, and you didn't get undergrad med, a biomed degree at UoM / Monash would suffice. Then you'd just study, hopefully passing the GAMSAT and such.

If I didn't get into med anywhere I had biomed/eng at Monash as my next preference. It's just more flexible in case you don't get into graduate medicine.

yep my sentiments exactly!

but LP alluded to the 'backup' plan which the double degree offers

i think i should check out monash biomed. ive neglected it so far and only thought about UoM biomed.
i just think having a double degree will be more fun LOL :p

Well when people ask this normally they are referring to any direct benefits but it really is just essentially earning 2 degrees in a short duration of time. Another obvious benefit would be that you can gain knowledge in another field which may implicitly help you on another field.

you would probably take 5 years to do a straight law degree anyway, as most people find it difficult to handle 4 law subjects a semester and most straight law students I know choose to do 3 instead

As nina mentioned, as far as i know, a lot of people do law/xxxx simply to split up the law degree a bit and spread up the workload. Might as well go after something you're interested too at the same time. It's only an extra year, why not? Unless you are not interested in arts/sci/comm (it'll be a hard slog then), i can't see a reason not to do a double.
