Well I'm from Biomedicine so ill just tell you about that. I personally had ups and downs with this degree cause some of the core subjects meant that i had to limit my choice of study as well as study areas that did not interest me. Having said that, some of the components of the third year core subjects(only available to biomed students) i really enjoyed cause we got to study very focused areas of disease. The two options most people take after biomedicine is either to pursue honours/masters and then PhD to launch into a research career or study a postgraduate health degree such as med and dent.

Was the course hard in anyway and what sort of jobs are you looking at if you don't want to pursue postgraduate medicine or dentistry?

HenryT, my sister did biomed and is doing her PHD in ethics (scholarship). It's something that she really enjoys.
2012-2014. BSc: Neuroscience. University of Melbourne.
2015-2018. Doctor of Optometry. University of Melbourne.

Unlikely to respond to any PMs these days.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioethics

e.g. using appropriate terminology --> esp. things like facial disfigurements --> some call it facial disorders e.g. if in a carcrash 'acquired facial disorder'

Things like stem cells, pretty interesting stuff.  I think under the genetics components of third year bioethics is actually a compulsory subject.

Yeah I can't find a link either

WOW thanks El2012 :)
I've heard a fair bit about stem cells but relating to cancer at how it could cure cancer one day and I remember a few years ago there was this lady who got her face reconstructed fully (First in the world) and it was pretty amazing because they said she acquired facial disorder from a carcrash..

Hi Henry :)

I've seen you posting on the boards a lot which is good and it's actually awesome that you're such a big picture thinker, looking into the future and at career possibilities.

I just couldn't help myself but remind you that you have a long time left in school, and just make sure you don't burn out too early! No use in doing hours of study a night to be completely done with it in the beginning of year 12. Sorry I know you probably are aware of that already but I'm a grandma :)

2012: Psych (37)
2013: English Literature Legal Business MUEP: Criminal Justice

Personal Message me, I love everyone.

Haha thanks Honey-Corowa :)
People have been telling me to not 'stress' out and not to burn out (Friends, Teachers and even people on AN) but it's more that I'm intrigued and I want to learn and have a grasp on my future... rather than being forced into doing something that I hate. And I don't always do work since I procrastinate so that's an issue I have to work on for later years :S

Majority of people in Biomed either go on to post-grad health degrees or they go down the Honours/PhD pathway (although talk is that unimelb wont be offering honours by the time you get to uni, so MSc/PhD). Other than that, some people take completely different paths and just get office jobs and such, one of my friends is working on opening a cafe since he has finished biomed.
