I'm glad this discussion finally headed in the intended direction. I was starting to feel terrible that I accidentally over-stepped the mark. It's also a relief to see that I'm not the only one with these unrealistic 'expectations' of me. :)

My mum isn't the only person with these views, it's quite prevalent amongst the Sinhalese. My uncle and aunt are having ENORMOUS trouble getting my cousin married because she's half Burgher (it's another Sri Lankan ethnic group). They resorted to advertising her with her mother's maiden name (mother is Sinhalese).

Ah, let me clarify. These are "proposals," so her profile is put on the newspaper for potential suitors to call up and arrange a family meeting. In this profile, her mother's maiden name is used, because its Sinhalese.
