Here's a taboo topic I'd like discussed: who here has had pressure from their parents to find a partner of the same racial background as you are? Personally, my parents do not mind if I don't marry an Italian girl, but I have been told that they will not be happy if I come home with an African-American, Asian or Middle-Eastern woman, or anyone from a minority religion.

I have an Italian background as well and I'm in the same situation. I'm guessing this must be the mentality of some of the older generation.

Firstly, they're not even religions, what are you talking about?

Secondly, pi's right, minority is definitely not the right kind of word to use and neither is obscure.

'Anyone from a minority religion' was supposed to be discussed as a separate group of people, I think.

No, it was made clear by the last few posts in Page 3 that this is not the case, "minority religion" was inclusive of the examples.

Poor sentence structure -_- *sigh* Still, what's a minority religion? And where? By obscure did you mean religions like Jedi? Or religions like Islam and Hinduism?

ANYWAY, imo, Stick your parents sound a bit racist tbh (and your wording makes you sound a bit like that too even though I want to believe it's just poor sentence structure), but as aforementioned, this isn't entirely surprising, it might be a generational thing.

My parents would freak if I brought home an Indian or African boy. I think that's a racism typical of immigrant Asians though

Mum -doesnt- want me dating Chinese boys, she reckons they're all pansies xD dad doesn't give a shit what I do as long as I don't get preggers I guess

If religions are really an issue in marriage, then it's another reason to not have religion in general, can two people not get married without this sort of medieval-esque feud?

The same goes for race - sounds like a modern day Romeo and Juliet.

What race does she want you to date then? :P Doesn't look like there are that many left!

(bring that up in [SPLIT] The "finer" points of apologetics and its rebuttal if you really want someone to debate it with you, but read the whole thread first before deciding to quote random posts and start debates there as the central debate in that thread is largely dead)

But really, that's a fairly archaic view, and as you can see from the posts being made, clearly we don't agree with such views. And that's what's going to matter in the future.

I apologise for the poor expression because I wasn't really sure how to say it. I really didn't intend to sound racist or be offensive. It's a little bit awkward and hence why I brought it up. Please excuse me and let the discussion continue. :)

My mum is very fierce and insistent that I date a Sinhalese girl and only a Sinhalese girl. She will literally go apeshit if she found out I was dating a girl from any other race. Worse still she might not even talk to me again. She went mental a couple of years back when she found out that I might possibly have been interested in someone who was not Sinhalese, she threatened that i will never see her again if I decide to go out with someone who isn't Sinhalese. She sees it as the ultimate betrayal.

I didn't say it as a point of debate, more of a personal expression of frustration.

Haha, it was more of a precaution so we wouldn't have two religion threads going at once haha :P

Interesting question. I thought of that myself. I THINK mum might be OK with it...a little bit iffy.

My mum isn't the only person with these views, it's quite prevalent amongst the Sinhalese. My uncle and aunt are having ENORMOUS trouble getting my cousin married because she's half Burgher (it's another Sri Lankan ethnic group). They resorted to advertising her with her mother's maiden name (mother is Sinhalese).
