Study Abroad Japan

Alright, recently I've been thinking about studying in Japan for a semester. But the thing is my course structure is really tight and its hard to shift things around, especially if I want to do IBL as well. I missed the information session they had weeks ago.

So my question is, do I have to use up a semesters worth of electives to go abroad or does my course just get lengthened another semester?

2014 - 2016: Master of Laws (Juris Doctor) - Monash

Ah damn. SE only has 8 electives, 3 are taken up by IBL, and 3 are taken up by studying abroad, leaving 2 electives. =/

Like I said I think you only have one elective slot if you decide to do honours so take that into account (with three for IBL).

I checked over the course map again, and realised that with the course prerequisite structure, it is impossible for me to do IBL and study abroad together. I can fit in IBL and Honours OR Honours and Study Abroad but not IBL and study abroad. >_>

Let's try it..

First year, first sem:
FIT1002
FIT1029
MAT1830
ENG1061

First year, second sem:
FIT1008
FIT1031
FIT1010
MAT2003 / MTH1020 with faculty permission (I did this)

First year, summer sem:
FIT2002

Second year, first sem:
FIT2001
FIT1004
FIT2004
FIT2043

Study abroad second sem:
(three electives)

Third year, first sem:
FIT2069
FIT2070
FIT3042
FIT3077

Third year, second sem:
FIT3045 (IBL)

Fourth year, first sem:
ECE2041
FIT4002
FIT4004
elective

Fourth year, second sem:
FIT2024
FIT3142
FIT3013
FIT4002
elective

The problem is FIT2024.. it's a prereq for fit4002..so maybe check on that. I have heard that the semester offerings for FIT2024 and FIT2043 will be swapped around next year - if that is the case, then you can overload that next year and everything should be fine. Gl

Hang on...so MTH1020 can replace MAT2003? I thought MTH1030 replaced it so assumed I would have to to do MTH1030. From your structure, it more possible than before. Also, does ECE2041 replace FIT3141? I looked it FIT3141 in the handbook and it said it wasn't offered this year, so I assume you had to take ECE2041 instead of FIT3141? I think I'll go and ask the Faculty to see if this is doable.

Thanks for all the help. Really appreciate it.

Yeah, MTH1020 works as well and it's pretty easy with an open book exam etc. ece2041 does replace fit3141 due to not enough students taking it and the content being very similar.

After some playing around with the structure you had, the best I could get is this. I changed, FIT2002 to 2nd year Summer Semester because this Summer I'll be going OS and won't be able to take it. Also, the semesters in Japan are in their winter, which is our summer, so I wouldn't be able to take FIT2002 in the second year summer semester if I went abroad second year second semester. The only problem is FIT3077, which is a pre-req for FIT4002. I would it in second year second semester but it only runs in first semester ever since last year. Maybe I can convince them to run it in second semester next year or something, idk.

[EDIT] I realised I could overload FIT2002 next year first semester If I went with your structure but I would have to go to Caulfield. I looked at the handbook for FIT4002, and apparently the only prereqs are FIT3077 and FIT2002.

I would recommend you talk to Sue Beningfield (IBL director) and the faculty of IT office ASAP. As it might not be the case you can even do IBL in the first semester of third year as it stands right now as there are two rounds of interviews to go through.

I have been to the office and gotten them to map out my course structure multiple times :P And they are always very helpful about it.
