I'm doing Arts @ Melb :) I plan to major in psych and so far I can tell you it has been great! :) Psych is an extremely interesting field and the psych department at melb are really organised in terms of lectures and preparing us for later year psych study through getting the basics (e.g. quantiative methods) down pat in first year itself :) Also the head tutors are really friendly and helpful and the exam is relevant and fair (i.e. if you've studied, you'll get the marks) :) Also, they put out practice exam Q's months before the exam so there's always that feeling of organisation and not worrying about having to wait until the last minute to get practice materials :)
In terms of Arts generally, I think it's great :) They've got a lot of student assistance units too like ASU (Academic skills Unit) to help out with essay-writing and referencing and what not and there's a lot of student support if you need it :) I think if you really do what you love then it will be a rewarding experience and you'll enjoy it :) Just make sure you stay on top of the readings + lectures and it'll be great! :)

Hahah it depends, really! For psych, I don't do any readings when they're given because my tutor never really bothers with them anyway (I didn't do them last sem either eeek) - like even for the Display rules one, we went through it again in class so I guess a lot of people don't do the readings haha but for ICC and Lit, my tutor always talks about them and bases discussions around them so unfortunately I have to!

Lecture-based. Except for social, there seems to be a few more readings based questions in the prac qs (except majority will still probably be lecture-based). I think they have to make it a fair assessment because probably 90% of us don't do the readings.

Sorry to cut in. But I'm still wondering b/w which uni for BA should I go for next year and I've heard lot of good things about Melb. However there is one that troubled me greatly is that Melb strongly prone for theoretical work. I'm thinking of a Psych major. So can someone clear this up for me? Thanks

Psych is quite theoretical - Idk about 2nd and 3rd year but so far in first year we've covered heaps of theoretical work, the lectures do cover heaps and there's a lot of concepts to learn. However it's not 100% theory, we also do some I guess you could call "practical" work in tutes, like presenting lab reports and statistical calculations and what-not and are tested on this in conjunction to the theoretical component :) Psych itself isn't AS practical as say, bio or chem, but it's not entirely theoretical either :) You should check out the undergrad unimelb psych booklet, it might help :) : http://content.yudu.com/Library/A1y7gj/UndergraduatePsychol/resources/index.htm?referrerUrl=http%3A%2F%2Ffree.yudu.com%2Fitem%2Fdetails%2F581422%2FUndergraduate-Psychology-2013---University-of-Melbourne%3Frefid%3D165070

If you want to work as a psychologist you have to do honours and masters anyway, you'll get plenty of experience. I wouldn't expect any BA with a major in psych to be heavy in practical experience, unless you go and find some yourself.

The thing is I'm not sure if I'll take up Psych as my future career so I want to get as much out of a psych major while also doing something I love (English maybe) in B.A
