Encountering conflict - The Crucible (Expository essay help)

The way I have been advised to approach this sort of piece is to write the first body paragraph on The Crucible and the rest of the body paragraphs on conflicts that explore similar ideas. I'm okay talking about The Crucible in relation to almost every prompt but I'm really struggling to find events in history or the media that I can write about for this context. I'm sure there are many. Can anyone give me any examples of events that I could write about for a range of prompts for encountering conflict?

In regards to war:
  • In parallel to 'The Crucible' there is the anti-communist regime in America (1950's)
  • The Vietnam War - Americans attempting to take control of the communist regime in Vietnam
  • World War II and the communist regime

I did an expository essay for my Crucible SAC comparing and contrasting the characters of Hale and Proctor with the two prominent leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, MLK and Malcolm X. I wish I had it with me to remember the prompt that got me to write about it.

As mentioned previously, McCarthyism from the 1950s served me well as a parallel to the Crucible in a couple of essays.

The idea that absolute power inevitably corrupts individuals leading to conflict could perhaps be a decent idea.  It can be linked to the two most prominent Communist nations to exist/have existed, China and Russia, especially when you look at their revolutions. If you like your Shakespeare, Macbeth is a nice example, if you're a fan of Orwell, Animal Farm is another good one.

I've referred to the McCarthy Era heaps but I'll look up the rest.
Are we allowed to refer to fiction? I was considering talking about Macbeth because it really worked with a prompt but I was unsure.

You can refer to any text you wish as long as you back it up with evidence. I refer to The Quiet American in my Crucible expos' because it has a heap of relevant parallels.

Maybe he's referring to quotes? I don't think it's necessary as it is in TR essays. Personally I'm not quote heavy on my expository essays if I'm using examples from other texts, I'll never use more than 3.

No quotes aren't the only form of evidence. You can indirectly show evidence through explanation of concepts in relation to textual events. If you're going to use a fictional source, like a novel, you have to explain why what happens in the text is relevant. You don't need quotes, but you do need to explore the text in some form.
