Congrats and good luck! :)

Are the interview offers for UQ out yet?

UQ just gives offers, no interviews :) But their offers are not out yet (they come out after ATARs), so no need to panic haha
Oh, silly me!
Perhaps there's already a thread dedicated to this, but I notice that you successfully obtained a place in Monash MBBS last year.  Would you be able to tell me what the MMI interviews entail?  Would you recommend that I attend some interview workshops?  I don't want to sound 'rehearsed' as I know that they are looking for natural, passionate responses, yet I don't want to walk in completely empty headed handed.  What type of preparation did you do last year?

Small disclaimer: I own ATAR Notes.

I think you should attend the ATAR Notes interview workshop :P Our tutor does a lot of great work specifically focussed on MMI and provides excellent notes for you to take home with you and prepare. We're also the cheapest by far and a mile, and we have smaller class sizes and -think- we offer better training too. *twiddles thumbs*

Yes. I saw the offer.  Very appealing indeed!
Definitely considering it.
Thank you.  :)

No worries, all interview discussion can happen here :)

Basically, the MMI is series of stations. Each station is in a different room with a different examiner (one in each room - professors, members of public, young doctors, old retired people, etc.) with a different theme. Themes can be a variety of things, such as ethical dilemmas, explanations, etc.

My recommendation, would be to check out my resources thread, I'll quote the relevant section here:

• ATARNotes discussion thread: MMI Info [Monash 2011]
• For a doc on detech examples (sometimes used in Monash interviews), see the attachment of this post (source)

Those links are a good start (they become less and less relevant as you go down, so focus on the first six in particular to get a feel for it). Definitely watch the video (first link) at the time I've posted. They have some official Monash info (hasn't changed since) and an example MMI response (note the candidate doesn't do too well haha).

As for prep:
Personally, I attended MedEntry's Interview training. It's costly, but I found the discussions really useful. As for stats and major pluses: 12/17 people from my session are now in Monash Med (not sure if the other 5 are elsewhere), and 1 scenario I had in the real MMI was one they went over too. So I recommend it if you can afford it (but weight it up with the other options I will list below).

Other prep options:
1) ATARNotes prep - see enwiabe's post above. The guy who runs it used to catch the same train as me to school and I know him from debating. He's a confident guy and knows his stuff.
2) Med Interview Prep Interest Check - why not? It's free and the guy running it passed an MMI, definitely worth a look at :)
3) Personal tutor - mixed reviews from people who had them. Personally I find group environments are more effective as you get to hear what others are going to say.
4) Practice with friends/family - again, mixed reviews and limited effectiveness imo. But most people who get into med probably take this route so it's definitely not an uncommon one!
5) No prep or winging it - not recommended but #yolo :P

Good luck :)

Thank you very much, Physics!
You've given me much more information than I hoped for.
Shall have a good read through everything first thing after the Chemistry examination.
Goodness! I just realized that I'm so pumped for these interviews!
Thanks again!

I'd be careful about assuming you know what they're looking for with respect to preparation. For some questions, demonstrating prior thought is a good thing. I see a lot of people saying "oh they want you to answer X, Y and Z when they ask about A" and I'm always somewhat surprised that they're so eager to pigeonhole the question straight away.

Like physiks said i'm doing a skype prep session (this reminds me to organise it properly haha) so if you come along to that there'll hopefully be some chat

Rather than do any interview prep course, I would honestly just sit down and have a real hard think about why you want to do medicine as well as what you have planned out for yourself in the future. Think about your past, when did you start wanting to become a doctor and what led you to make that decision, think about what you have done in order to show that you'll one day become a good doctor. Then think about the future, what do you hope to one day achieve.

Think about the skills required in a doctor and think about whether you have those skills, think about what those skills entail and how you've developed them over time. Think about your interests, hobbies, what you like doing...etc.

Don't go into an interview and lie, if you have to be dishonest or rehearsed in order to pass it, then you're better off not going into medicine, because it looks like your desires and passions lie elsewhere, be honest, be yourself and say what you believe is right, not what you think will get you into medical school.

Do you think it would be useful to look over chem terms before the interview??? Or should sticking to 'thinking' about various scenarios be enough? :/

Also am I allowed to ask this?????

Detech hasn't been used in MMIs to my knowledge. Your call I guess.

I'd be surprised if Monash did it since you're all school leavers and it's a bit harder to assess it, but it's definitely used in other MMIs

You might not have to do a detech, but you might have to explain how to do something.
