Distractions
« on: October 24, 2012, 06:10:52 pm »

Hi all, I have recently becoming more and more less productive in for working hard in exam time like, writing English essay's an in that I have many distractions like going to the toilet, eating food, procrastination which occurs alot during the time I do my work which reduces my time available to work and it's really annoying since I have alot of things to do under a strict time limit. How could I reduce the number of times that I am being distracted by?. If you guys give me tips and or any advice to help with this problem would be amazing and very appreciated :)

You have to go to the toilet so much that it's become a distraction? You might want to see a doctor about that.

It probably just comes down to just sucking it up and writing the essay in one go etc. Cutting down distractions (e.g. turn off the computer, go to a quiet study area) is an option if you have to, but all that doesn't make a difference to the fact that you actually have to put in the effort to sit there and do the work. You might also be trying to do *too* much in a set time period too, you should be fairly reasonable to what you can actually get done.

- empty water bottles to pee into. sorry I can't help with #2s
- get your food processed into mush and drink them from a beer hat while you study

(seriously though. those are not distractions, they are things you need to do to survive =_=)

For procrastination, depending on what you're getting distracted by:
- give Facebook password to friend
- use Chrome and install the extension called "StayFocusd", which blocks your access to sites that distract you
- delete any computer games / give your Steam password to a friend / whatever

Haha 2 point is hilarious, might try that :P. Procrastination is okay I can manage it but I was simply stating that it can be a distraction at times. I know those distractions that involve eating, drinking and going to toilet is human nature and there's nothing I can do to stop but it occurs so many times that it feels like a distraction

I think the problem, I drink too much when I doing it in shorter amounts of time. That is exactly what I am doing right now thinking I can do so much but in reality half the work I expect to do

I think you really need to take a look at how you're treating your study. I would be inclined to say that you're seriously misguided with how you're approaching it if you feel the need to blame the essential things you need to do to survive as wasting time.

If "half the work [you] expect to do" is enough, then I don't see that there's a problem. You don't need to be studying 24/7.

If it isn't enough, then there's probably a bigger problem with what you're doing in the time outside of eating food.

I have an accounting SAC to study for tomorrow and I am procrastinating as we speak... (I should be studying now!!!)
This always works for me personally.

1.  Clean your table

A clean environment always places me in a good mood and makes you feel more organised and relaxed because of the lack of clutter. I find that having space helps me study easily and more efficiently.

You probably will find some different benefits from doing this, but the main point is that it does benefit you.

2. Keep your phone next you

Yes, many people say, texts, Facebook is a distraction yadayadaya.... Doesn't matter. You may find that if you do turn your phone off or leave it behind somewhere, you'll be tempted to find out if anyone has texted or if anything new of facebook has been posted, and that will waste your time as unnecessary curiosity is in your head when you should be thinking of just studying.

Computers are a large distraction because you can do multiple tasks at ease(not that phones these days aren't capable of multitasking) , whereas on a mobile phone some of those tasks would seem rather tedious at times..

Keep it on silent and when you finish a section, just check up if anything is new.. You may even forget it's there!!

3. Get your book and force yourself.

The single hardest part is pretty much getting your book out. Just FORCE yourself to go in there and pick up the book. Force yourself to study for just 10 minutes, just 10 minutes. By the time you start studying, you will feel a sense of accomplishment and/or happiness that you've spent your time learning or practicing something you wouldn't have normally done.

Happy Studying :D

Now I've spent 10 minutes writing this haha!! I'll follow those steps above and I know I'll fall asleep smarter than I ever was. :P

Most points have been covered, but I know what you mean. You will do anything to get out of studying or writing that essay, happens to me all the time. I write 1 word, success! Lets go see what's in the fridge... 2 hours later write a few more words maybe a few sentences if I'm lucky then another trip to the holy fridge/pantry! Sometimes I even find myself literally just sitting at my desk doing nothing, staring at the work, out the window whatever is less boring than that stupid assignment! It's pretty bad, but in the end you have to suck it up and finish it off. The sooner it's done the more time you will have to spend doing things you want - which will be quality time as well since you're not wasting your time doing pointless things :/
As I'm typing this the ad that appears says 'Your Creativity is Hungry.' 'We're a Buffet.' And there is a picture of a chick stuffing food in her mouth looks like there is a cupcake with green icing. I think it's time for a pantry/food run! :P

I already do the first 2 steps but the 3rd step is hardest of them all..

I remember seeing the doctor about my constant need to pee every 20 mins of the day. Turns out that I was just drinking 3-5L of water a day....problem solved.

I literally moved to my dad's for SWOTVAC + exam period so that I could have the bare minimum for a room - a futon and a small desk and chair. It's quite effective for studying since it's pretty hard to be distracted with almost nothing... except my laptop > internetz > reason why im typing right now
