Ahh, so just managed to update both my desktop and my laptop to Windows 8

(I actually claimed I bought both last month so I could take advantage of the $14.99 upgrade deal and it worked!!) - So yeah, two upgrades for $30, not too bad at all :)

Anyone else on Windows 8 yet?

Yeah, I know, through DreamSpark - I tried to get it as well, but couldn't :(

So yeah, in the end though $15 isn't a ridiculous amount to spend :P

I'm still on XP...

What's Windows 8 like anyway? I haven't really heard anything overly good about it compared to Windows 7.

I didn't like the Preview or RC (or whatever it was). It's pretty crappy unless you have a touch-screen imo.

You just have to claim you bought a computer in the past few months - you'll get a discount coupon which you can apply later on to get it for $14.99

How old's your computer? :P

Hmm, well it's got both positives and negatives. In terms of the removal of the start menu, it bugged me at the start, but it's become something I'm used to now, just after several hours of use. It's definitely designed as a tablet/laptop sort of OS though, evidenced by the fact that it's much easier to use on my 13-inch laptop compared to my desktop, which is equipped with two 23" monitors.

There's generally two modes, there's the classic desktop mode (which is like Windows 7) which is what I currently use and there's a "Metro" mode which is the one you've probably seen around with the tiles and all - I really fail to see the benefit of using Metro mode exclusively - because it makes your computer operate like a tablet, which is horrible on a 2 x 23" monitor equipped desktop.

Essentially though, you can just stick to Desktop mode and it'll operate fine, its graphics are a lot less "snazzy" than Windows 7 in that there's no more transperancy or gimmicky features, everything is that little bit cleaner, the fonts, the lines, it looks quite pleasing - like you know how Apple stuff have those distinctive rounded corners (if you've used iOS or OSX), well with Windows 8, Microsoft has really gone for the straight lines and clean, sharp corners.

In terms of improvement over Windows 7, it's a classic case of how you look at it - in terms of performance, it's definitely better than Windows 7 - benchmarks have shown that it is actually faster and because Microsoft has removed all of the gimmicky graphics, it performs much, much faster. Both my computers have SSDs, so load times on Windows 7 were already crazy fast, but Windows 8 really does load quickly (it takes less time to cold-boot my computers than my phone :P - so go figure). I'd say it's worth the upgrade, especially for $15, I don't agree with the whole "it's in the direction computing is going" in regards to it being a tablet-y OS and all - that's why I stick to the Desktop mode, but the change isn't anywhere near as radical as the media have made it out to be (typical media blow up).

Yeh just had a look. You don't HAVE to have purchased a new PC in the past couple of months. You can fake it, they don't check. Already got my promo code :D

Probably won't upgrade until after exams though. Been running Win8 RC on my laptop for a while, pretty similar to windows 7 imo, except for tile view which is near useless for a desktop PC.

Exactly what I did, built my desktop last year, bought my laptop 8 months ago, so neither were really eligeable, but I faked it :P

Ah yeah, if you're running RC, just upgrade it, took like 30 mins for me (SSD though - from Win 7 to Win 8) - but yeah, I'll do a clean install after exams.

Hmm, you reckon there's a way to have two upgrades with just one payment?

How exactly does the upgrade process work?

Nah, you can't do that, because you won't be able to activate :P

I'll be sticking to W7 for a while. I just cannot stand the Metro UI. Well not on a desktop.

Even the idea that MS have opted to go in this direction is too much for me.
