How much does your ATAR score matter to you?

I find myself not caring a lot about my ATAR score. Although I care about what course I choose and which university I attend, I ultimately see my ATAR score as just a number and not some sort of "be all and end all" of what my future holds. Maybe I'm just a high school bludger of some sort. I don't know.

Anyway, back to the point. How much does your ATAR score matter to you?

I am interested in your opinions and how you justify them.
Thanks!

Mine doesn't matter to me. I'm not expecting high anyway.
For me, I just want good scores in English and Psych to justify for all of the hard work I've put in and to represent the love I have for those subjects.
All I need is above 60 and I'll be happy.  :)

Mattered a fair bit to me when I was in VCE (as one of my goals was to hit a numerical ATAR value of 99.15). Doesn't matter at all now, I can't even remember what my study scores scaled to.

I'm more interested in my subjects than my ATAR score. Hopefully investing in the former will be conducive to success in the latter, though. Learning is a more of a process than an outcome. You miss the point of education if you're simply preoccupied with rankings and grades. If you work hard and you think your subjects are enriching and worthwhile, then you're going to perform well anyway. :)

Best of luck Lipton, I'm sure you'll achieve a better score than 60 :) Is that what you need for your course?

physiks, was this because you wanted to get into a certain course? or just a general goal?

lozmatron, those are some wise words! If you believe that being interested more in your subjects will be conducive to success in the latter, does that mean that your ATAR score matters a lot to you? And that your process of thinking is hopefully going to get you there?

It was more of just a general goal, because I had the feeling (after playing around with ATAR calc) that I would be happy with myself to achieve that :)

If I am honest, I'd care about my ATAR the same amount University does.  If that makes any sense

However, my parents probably view it as more of a prestige thing. Something tell and compare with other aunties and their son/daughters score.  ;D

Mattered to me a lot last year. Don't think about it much really now...what's more important to me is integrity. Would rather be an 80 ATAR who has integrity than be a 100.95 and a douche.

I should really care a lot more about my ATAR, I need to get 99+ to get accepted into the course I want (PhB Science at ANU), but so far I just don't feel like doing work for any subject except UMEP maths, which will be my two last exams in about a month.
The English exam is in 4 days and I haven't even completed a full practice essay. Oops.

On one side of my extended family, I will be the first of 15 cousins to complete my VCE, with six having gone through school before me, none getting past Year 11. On the other side, I'll be the third to complete VCE (one other did VET). Neither scored particuarly high at all.

In short, the actual number means stuff all, as long as it gets me into my course, and serves to prove that hard work, not just intelligence, can get you to achieve awesome things.

One of my friends is in the same position as you. She would be the first person in her family to complete year 12 and get into uni, so she has very little pressure. Problem is, she would be working a lot harder if she had pressure from her family, and that would also yield better results which in turn can expand her choice in courses for university.

Heaps! Funnily enough, I don't have much pressure from my parents. In fact, I put all the pressure on myself! My parents realize how important my ATAR is to me, and I guess they push me on when I'm down and provide support (I wouldn't call this pressure, but more or less social support). That said, I don't think they would be too happy if I end up with something less than 90-95 as my ATAR after all the hard work I've put in. Plus, they were practically geniuses in their time, so I think they would expect quite a bit from their daughter  ;) So basically, my parents have set the standards in which they expect me to score. I've set the standards for myself, which are much higher than their expectations, and thus, they're trying to help me achieve my goal.
