I knew a chick in my year level who was constantly receiving academic and sports awards consistently from year 7~11 and was school captain - and since she received so many awards she got other random awards from the local council and Monash

she was smart, pretty, good at sports.... but in the end I only saw her in the '11 achievers guide for Further and Chemistry :S

she did not dux the year level  got into melb biomed on SEAS for a sports injury (pfft)

it was the underdog-that-no-one-would-really-expect who dux'd the year level and was more humble about it

tl;dr - rewards can be ego boosters but it doesn't mean you're #1 (unless its for dux). I felt like my school unnecessarily pampered her ego :\

There you go guys, when there's a will, there's a way.

BioMed at UoM? Just purposely injure yourself ;)

Failing that, BSc :P

At my Year 12 graduation they gave 'subject awards' for the person who is #1 rank. Got Literature, Business and Economics so was fairly pleased with that, considering I had a feeling I wasn't going to get any!

I wish my school did that...
We have overall academic awards, which aren't given to the students with the highest marks, but rather to the students who supposedly had the best "work attitude" (in other words, the students who suck up the most).
We also have awards to random things like a music award, a LOTE award and a few sports awards. Then we have community awards for helping out in the community (nothing to do with academia) and then a lot more sports awards.
We have no maths, English or science awards, which I find very disappointing.

2013 ATAR - 88.50
