If I break a string, what happens?
« on: November 03, 2012, 08:53:00 pm »
My music performance exam is tomorrow. I play contemporary guitar. I just restrung my guitar last night and I will have a spare electric sitting in a case if I break a string. If I do break one, is there some sort of protocol that the examiners go through? Since a string break would be out of my control and not my fault, would they let me start the song again and not continue timing? My program in total, including guitar changes and time between songs ends up being about 24:30. I can eliminate one song from the list, but a song restart and a guitar change would still cause me to go over 25 minutes. So if anyone knows what the case is, please inform me.

Any response is much appreciated.

"Provision should be made by the students for any equipment failure. For example, students should bring spare reeds, strings or cables."

This may apply to time limits as well I would have thought.

Don't go at it too hard! Play conservatively enough to make sure that you don't break a string... its really up to you.

The examiners can't afford to stop the timing in a perf exam as they have many other exams scheduled that day obviously - so its a little hard for them.

Good luck for the exam!

How you handle it can possibly boost your mark.  My teacher examined a band in a group with an guitarist, who broke a string midway through a song, so the lead guitarist took an extra solo and the other guy restrung it in a minute and got extra marks.
