I thought all local students are guaranteed an internship anyway... so why would it be so cut-throat?

Because when you put a bunch of type As in a role that feeds their ego, bad things happen

(internships may become less guaranteed for CSPs in future fyi)

LOL, meddies tend to be very overly competitive, it's not for any real cause or purpose, it's just like Russ says, they're a bunch of type As, their egos are being fed...etc.
