The future of online uni study! your opinions????????????

hey guys,

i was just wondering what everybody's thoughts about online study (off-campus) in comparison to studying on-campus?

what are the pros and cons of each?

Would you ever consider studying uni online, if you weren't married or had a full-time job?

Also, if you did study online, what would you do with all that spare time?

Benefits:
-Have more time for independent study (essentially studying at uni is mostly independent study anyway)
-More freedom/free time to pursue other interests, such as sports or to join a uni clubs and meet new people.
-Easier to catch up on uni assignments/readings if you fall a little behind.
-No long travel times in public transport
-More time for working part-time. If you can get relevant work to what you are studying than that is a plus!
-All lectures are usually recorded online.

Cons:
-Can't go on study groups for those who rely on group work to learn.
-Harder to interact with lecturer or ask questions in lecture theatre.

Do you think it's harder to get good grades while studying online (off-campus) than when studying on-campus? Or is it about the same or does it depend on the person and their study habits/type of person they are?

What is your opinion of people who choose study their undergrad compeletely online with the increasing popularity of online study?

Personally, I would rather go to university to experience university life and actually feel like i'm achieving something. Being online is open for laziness.

I also think questions can be answered more easily when in person than online.

I'm not in uni, but the whole social aspect appeals really appeals to me a lot.

This. It just wouldn't feel the same to me if I was doing my whole course online. I would miss so much, I would have hardly any friends any friends and I would start to get bored very easily. It's bad enough that all of my friends are going to a different university to me (they all want to go to Melbourne whilst I want to go to Monash), so I don't want to completely isolate myself from society.

Personally, I would rather go to university to experience university life and actually feel like i'm achieving something. Being online is open for laziness.

This also. I've just done year 12 philosophy via distance ed and I've learnt from that that it is very easy to fall into lazy habits. Sometimes you only want to do the minimum amount of work necessary. Being at home (for me at least) isn't the best study environment, especially when I have my gaming computer on the same desk as where I do homework. Being at university would probably motivate you, like the whole atmosphere guides you to success somehow.

It's a viable alternative to going to Uni that would never work for me because I would just go on IRC instead.

Spending the next 3-6 years of your life at home whilst you study online....

Sure there's a bunch of benefits in saving time, money, and whatnot, but in terms of getting the most out of your life and university life, you will be sorely missing out.

Might not be for everyone but it might help those who has disabilities or other commitments such as parenting or work and are not able to regularly attend uni, this might be something that motivates them to get out there and do a course! so its greatfor some

Yeah definitely. My brother never knew what he wanted to do in high-school (he did VCAL, despite being very intelligent) and has been working full-time since he graduated. Just yesterday he completed his enrollment for a BA in Counter-terrorism because he decided that's what he wanted to do. He couldn't give up his job and the online course allows him to do both anonymously.

With online learning there's always the option of watching the lecture at another time which could lead to excessive procrastination.

I'd like to further echo the above sentiment and say simply;

If you have some kind of extenuating circumstance i.e. work which prevents you from attending university, it is a valuable and useful resource.

If you're planning on being a full time University student over the next 5 years... it seems like it'd be an incredible waste of those years when University offers so much more then just grades.

Good on him! It's really good that he's able to get into uni and do a course that he wants to do - I think this shows the benefit of online uni study, I'm guessing your brother could not have physically went to uni whilst keeping his job, so obviously this allows him to have the best of both worlds

I think another con is that you don't get to do practicals and interact with students as much! Unless they find a way around that I don't think online dissections of toads is a good idea relative to the real life experience.

But I've also heard that in a lot of cases uni isn't actually very social place at all. You can go to uni in and out of lectures without really talking to anyone or meeting people. In uni it is quite common now for students in many situations to mostly talk to one another during practicals or perhaps in tutorials only. Some courses don't have practicals and are mainly just a series of tutorials/lectures.
You can get the same social experience by joining uni clubs which you can still do as an off-campus student. Furthermore, what if you are attending a non-GO8 uni? You wouldn't be able to network as much with the other students. Going on campus can be a drag and a waste of time, especially if you don't use the time you have wisely/effectively and if you live really far away from campus.

What are some other major pros/cons for studying online?

Thanks!

While what you're saying might be true with regular on campus uni, those people are choosing not to socialise by choice. But by moving uni online, you would drastically reduce the amount that people socialise I guess.
