It is a big step up, not in terms of the theory or anything but the exams are much harder.

For the previous 3 semesters - the midsem has been a killer, the fail rate in some tutes were like 90% lol

This semester the midsem was very easy - however the final exam was fucking insane, so yeah...

The unit itself is not very hard, I'd say probably the same level around corp fi, just new concepts, however the exam is probably on par with options lol

Yeah lol they tend to do that, if the mid sem is really hard they make the final easier, if the midsem is easy, then the final exam is gonna be fucking crazy.

So you better pray you get a hard midsem since it's not worth as much :P

more or less this exam was a one off, i think its more just knowing how to apply what you learnt in every situation possible. If you did the past exam papers for this subject you would have received a rude awakening as none of the questions were similar to this exam.

If the exam was ANYTHING like the past exams, I would have aced it. The unit will be much easier next semester.

Just a question (since I want to do finance next year), when you mean hard does that mean there are concepts not introduced in the lectures (and you must have studied it independently) OR hard as in it was within the scope of the lectures but you have to be able to apply the concepts in unknown contexts?

hard as in it was within the scope of the lectures but you have to be able to apply the concepts in unknown contexts

if you use practice exam questions to study from you get used to the sort of questions that they may ask and the way they ask is similar year to year.

but because the lecturer/examiner changed this year the exam also changed it was made worst with the fact that he was pressured to make sure it was very hard/unexpected so people could not get HDs (due to an easy mid sem test) but in turn it scrwd every1 else up who didnt do well on the mid sems to begin with, plus the exam is a hurdle.

e.g. past exam papers had options (one of the finance topics) as a standard calculation every year however, this year they decided to make it a theory question (unexpected/hard)

plus i felt the marking scheme wasnt fair in terms of the amount of work you had to do to actually get the 2 marks for instance.
