Youth Allowance for interstate study?

Hi guys I am going to be moving to ANU next year (from Geelong) and I've been looking into the potential to receive Youth Allowance for studying away from home.
Just wondering if anyone on here has any experience with doing so?

I've had a look around the Centrelink website but I can't really clearly work out the eligibility criteria... Can anyone help?
I would assume your parents' wages would affect the amount you can receive but I can't really pinpoint exactly how that works...

There's a payment rates page here which seems somewhat promising.

i think u shud look at rent assistance, youth allowance changed the rule where i think you have to be aged 21 or over, full time study, some income test etc... You can also try to apply for study grants at your university (relocation/accomodation etc...)

They either use your parents income if they consider you dependent. If you are independent that is you earn over x amount over some period of time then they will use your income. If your parents earn over 100k taxable income combined you won't get anything by being independent. Rent assistance and other associated payments are add ons to the youth allowance, so you need to receive at least $1 of youth allowance to receive anything.

Just give them a call maybe?
The phone number is 132 490.

I had a quick browse through their website for you.

I don't think you'll have any problem with getting the away from home rate.

However, I think you'll have trouble qualifying as independent. This means that your eligibility for Youth Allowance will be dependent on your parents' income. If your parents earn a decent income or have a significant amount of assets, this will reduce the amount you can get from Centrelink.

There's an online rate estimator. Select "Estimate Centrelink rates only", and from there answer the questions based on your circumstances.
