Sorry, but I have to be a wet blanket on this.
http://www.spokes.com.au/crash-stats.aspx#/rider-safety/crash-statshttp://www.monash.edu.au/miri/research/reports/atsb174.htmlStaying off the highway isn't going to stop you from being less dead if you end up in a serious accident.
I'm not an ignorant random who's never ridden a motorbike before, by the way.
Both my parents, as well as many in my extended family, are licenced and have motorbikes.
Three years ago, my mother was seriously injured in and has been left disabled by a motorcycle accident in which she was a pillion passenger.
My cousin was killed in a motorbike accident in an industrial estate (read: not on a highway, not at night, nor even busy city traffic).
The street on which he died was named after him (see page 12).
IF you do decide to get your motorbike licence and get a motorbike, which I strongly advice against, for fk's sake
wear full leathers each and every time you ride, or else wear equally protective and specially designed gear.
"Standard demin jeans have very low abrasion resistance, they will last 0.6 of one second in contact with a road surface..." You don't want to be wearing jeans and a t-shirt even in a slow speed accident... let's just say that "road rash" is putting it mildly... once the road has run out of clothes to rip through, it'll grind you down to the bone. I'm not going to provide any graphic links, but there are millions of them but a google search away.
