Monash Second Round Interviews

I have this from ssNake who forwarded me an email from Monash. I'm summarising what they said here.

People have been asking about how second round interviews are going to be awarded. This is how it is going to work:

People with 98-99.85 ATAR will be noted (as they are ELIGIBLE for the Excellence Scholarship). The UMAT scores of these people will be noted. These candidates will be put in rank order based on ATAR and UMAT (if it is the same method as last year, I suspect it would be 50:50, using z-scores). The top set (not sure how many) will be selected for second round interviews.

People with 99.90 and 99.95 are GUARANTEED an interview, so long as their UMAT is above 150 total.

Guess Monash wasn't too happy losing 99.90-ers to UoM :P

Great news!

No idea why all interviews aren't UMAT and ATAR though tbh...

^ our Careers co-ordinator said the second-round stream caused great problems for Monash in finding the interviewers required for the Jan round.

Because Monash believes the UMAT is the better indicator for whether one will succeed in med.

Then why give it the same weighting as the ATAR haha

I honestly think it's because it's to do with logistical reasons, there's not enough time to interview everyone after the ATAR has come out and furthermore, the truth is, there are a lot more people who have an excellent ATAR and shit UMAT than excellent UMAT and shit ATAR - so it makes sense that they just interview everyone with good UMATs first and then interview everyone with UMATs slightly lower, but ATARs still high enough to get in.
