Hardly anyone says that from my experience, they either guess or sometimes if you pause for too long the teacher just skips over you though.

I used to say it back at high school but I would follow it by some shy laugh then stare at the floor to avoid the teacher's reaction

usually the teacher would just pick another person but whether I would be told off would depend on the situation

Mate, it really depends on the situation.
e.g
If it's a work environment and you really don't know.. then be like "I don't know at the moment, but I will find out and get back to you".
