Precognitive dreams - fact or fiction? 'Fate' or coincidence?

Ok, so basically I'm keen to hear your opinions on the topic of dreams

I had a few recently, one that really spooked me, where I was interacting with people I didn't know, but in the dream I 'felt' like I'd known them forever and my behaviour was normal when in reality, it's totally out of character...what's worse is that I was older ;/

On a side note, I dreamt of my yr 11 study score before I actually received it....but I'm going to put that down to coincidence since things lacking logical explanations freak me out.

So, thoughts? What weird things have happened to you? Do you think there is truth in superstition??

Side note: I don't think I am 'psychic' in any way...but the dream did get me thinking about this topic  ;)

I had a pretty creepy dream where I was abandoned by all my friends and family then I was completely and utterly alone and I tried to support myself by getting a job but I wasn't wanted by anyone

I started to cry in the dream but ended up crying irl as well since I woke up and felt like my eyes were puffy and tear-stained

I dont think it has anything to do with my fate or superstition but it was... odd

I wouldn't go so far to say that dreams "predict" things like study scores or that there's anything superstitious about them, but I definitely think that the subconscious mind knows things before we acknowledge them tangibly. (Incidentally, has anyone read The Road Less Travelled by M. Scott Peck? :D :D It's one of the reasons why the concept of psychotherapy interests me... ) ( although if you read it stay healthily sceptical about some of his ideas  ^_^ .)

I had a dream earlier this year that I still wonder about.  I was driving a car and accelerating, faster and faster. I couldn't slow down and I panicked so much that I crashed into a tree. Suddenly, out of nowhere my music teacher was there asking me if I was alright. I said I was fine and I was physically unharmed but for some reason I felt incredibly guilty for not being able to stay in control ( hmm...symbolic, methinks) . Then green insects started crawling and biting my skin no matter how hard I tried to brush them off. Then I woke up.

What say you about that? :D

The more I look back on that dream though, and the events that were to come, it makes sense - but not in any kind of psychic superstitous way. It was more like...suppressed thoughts arising in my subconscious? I'm sure there's a psychological explanation for it, anyhow.

Ha, yes I find that often random people from life appear in dreams (a la your music teacher)

It has often been said that dreams bear a more symbolic insight into our own psyches than being premonitions, but I think you'd be the only one capable of determining whether the loss of control of the car reflected any true concerns of yours at the time.  ;)

Something I find quite interesting however, is the acknowledgement of precognitive dreams by science...strange seeing as though you would think these sorts of dreams would contradict the principles of science itself.

On another note, it has been said that your mind never creates faces in your dreams, but simply uses those you've already seen, no matter how insignificant these encounters may be....

Would it creep you out to see a 'stranger' in your dream knowing they existed? Or would you be more creeped by the knowledge that you yourself may be haunting the subconscious of another individual you've never formally met before??

Haha I know what you mean, although in this case it wasn't really random at all. I think it had to do with me deciding to be in the orchestra pit for our school musical and not knowing if I could handle it and still keep up with everything else and other issues and my music teacher was kind of the embodiment of these expectations I was putting on myself.

I agree that it's mere insight but in this way I suppose your subconscious is letting you know how you're going to respond to future events based on the decisions you've made, even if you deny this on a conscious level. I'd argue that you can forsee to a certain extent how things are going to unfold, according to your current state of mind.

I think it still fits in with an empirical perspective. You perpetuate your own prophecy. In my case, I probably knew how I was going to react emotionally but ignored all (subconscious?) signs because I thought that I should be able to handle a challenge and experience something new, even though deep down I was shit scared of crashing - also I wasn't really sure if it was something I wanted since I had other goals in mind. Now I know I have limits, and that I only have to do the things I actually want to do, no matter how other people coerce or convince me otherwise. This is my life and no one else's and I do what I want with it. :)  In retrospect, I saw it all coming but not through any form of extrasensory information. The dream was a premonition but in no supernatural sense whatsoever.

That's really interesting. I've definitely dreamed of people I don't recall and wondered if it was an invention of my mind or not.
