I cant believe our school had a median of 30 and 5.2% with study scores above 40.

All things considered, Lauriston posted the best results by a mile this year.

But they had 4 times less students than mac rob and 7 times less students than MHS. If there was some magic formula that took into account how many students were in each school then I think MHS would come up on top by far.

Lauriston is academically non-selective.
Their results are phenomenal.
Selective schools don't count. I don't need proof that a selective school will do well. It says nothing about the school rather than the students they select.

Wow my schools avg. ss was 27 and only 0.5% got above 40 :(

Am I doomed because of how poorly my school performs, because of that cohort crap? haha

My cohort largely did average/below average - but if you maintain rank 1 in your subjects, you won't be influenced by their performance.

My school giving us piss easy sacs in some classes making it impossible to differentiate between top students' abilities didn't help, though  :-[

Yes, this can be a problem for the top students, because it brings them back to the field.
On the other hand, difficult SAC's can destroy the confidence of the poorer students.
Not an easy decision for schools.

Scaling accommodates for the strength of the cohort doing the subject not the difficulty of the subject
Correct. However I didn't say it was the difficulty of the content within the subject in question (Although I admit I wasn't very clear), I said it was how difficult it was to attain the mean - which is affected by cohort strength (and is what I meant by 'difficulty'). It is then compared with other subjects the students have done, and a scaling is determined.

To my understanding this is the scaling process in a nutshell...

Pretty solid.
They needed a few more like you this year :)

What do you think of the Lauriston performance, fuzzylogic?
They pulled off mac.rob like numbers with a non-selective cohort. Pretty amazing, isn't it?

Work on getting rank 1, then your cohort will barely affect you if you have the skills/knowledge :D

Yeah this. I was rank 1 in 3 in my top 4 subjects, definitely helps as then you're only relying on yourself come exam time.

Thanks for the advice guys! I definitely plan on ranking 1st. :P

Yeah lauriston was impressive- shows that anyone can do well in vce, not just selective schools.  Although to be honest a lot depends on the cohort/ whether students do IB etc.  as an aside it'd be interesting to see what subjects lauriston excelled in compared to macrob!

That is a very good point.
The VCE tables would not include IB results, is this right?
I don't have direct experience with IB, but would you say that the IB cohort is above average at PLC for instance? (I am talking in general, not in comparison to guns like you :)

My school is the biggest lol. We had the most 90+'s this year, but also the most <70's this year. I think we rank at like 130 or something.
