Need some course advice

Hey guys,

My goal is to finish an Engineering degree.

I was offered a scholarship at Monash but I am not fully sure whether or not I will take it because I can go to Melbourne.

First things first, can anyone provide their 2 cents on whether I should do a double degree or do the masters

My second question is which course I will take alongside (or before) the engineering one. I was thinking Commerce at the start but now I'm leaning towards Science because I like maths, chemistry, physics and all those types of subjects. Another thing that has struck me is the Bachelor of Biomedicine that my parents suggest I do. I'm not really keen in it because I've always assumed it's to do with medicine and health and all that stuff which I have completely no interest in. I've read some of the course information things but I'm still confused as to what it involves. Is it related to medicine and health care and that kind of stuff? Is it like Biology, learning about the human body? I also discovered that (at least on UniMelb's website) that many of the majors in Biomed is in Science. So why does Biomed require 99 while science only needs 90?

Final factor that I have to take into account (though not really that important) is that Monash is very close to my house and Melbourne is at least a 30-60 minute trip.

Any advice is appreciated!

Bachelor + Masters @ UoM = Double degree @ Monash
Biomed is almost the same as a science degree but with a fancy name and a couple of added majors.

Scholarship and live close to Monash. Hmm... If I were you I'd take that in a heart beat!

I'm of the same opinion as swarley.

Engineering scholarship at Monash plus you live close by, plus doing engineering, don't see a reason as to why you want to go to Melbourne. Hopefully it's not for trivial reasons such as friends there and the ranking of Melb uni etc...

As for the double degree, I've done science before and like you had liked Maths, physics and chem before going into uni. Not saying that you won't like it, but subjects in uni are a lot different from VCE. For engineering, I like to refer it as something similar to applied Maths/ physics that spins your head around.

For commerce, some employers prefer it while some don't. Do it if you have an interest in it but don't force it if you don't. (Ask yourself questions like do you check the stock market regularly, interested in managing projects, etc etc.)

As for biomed I'm not too sure about it.

Monash hands down.
- I believe it is the best uni in Australia for engineering
- You live close to it as well. Don't underestimate how draining it would be to travel long hours to and from uni every day
- You have a scholarship
- You can do a double degree
I don't know why you would even consider UoM? Could you explain your thought processes here? Do you think UoM is better than Monash? (It isn't)

As to your double degree, science seems to match your interests. Also, from what I've heard, science is a great complement to engineering.
