buying a phone from the US :D

Hey guys,
I just thought of an idea of getting an iphone 5 a cheaper way, but I am not sure if it will work or not (i need your opinions) :)
So I am thinking about purchasing the iphone 5 from http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/shop_iphone/family/iphone5 which is locked to a service provider in the US. Since I have a cousin in the US, he can probably ship to me. Here I can unlock the phone at home so I can connect it to Optus. Can this work? and are there any flaws to this idea? (besides voiding the warranty)

You can buy them outright unlocked and contract free. Although they are quite pricey ($649 for 16gb)

lol i am aware of that and i am trying to avoid paying that much for an iphone 5 :P thanks anyway :)
