Do you believe that whiteout is necessary to use, or are you happy with crossing stuff out?

Whiteout - necessary or not?

Hi everyone,

This is a question that's been on my mind for a while; I'm just interested in what people think.  :)

It's quite a silly question really, but still, I'm happy for this thread to brew into a discussion on the necessity of whiteout.

Much prefer crossing out, white out always goes everywhere for me haha. Sometimes it might be wise to know where you've gone wrong too.

There's always the tape style of whiteout? You know the one where you hold it, and then pull it across? The advantage of this one is  you don't have to wait for it to dry - you can just write straight on it  :)

The liquid whiteouts just make me mad haha - they take FORever to dry and you have to press really hard as well  :P

Still, since we're not allowed whiteout in exams, it's best not to practise writing essays with it or something...

I'm a white-out person
For any page of notes I wrote, you can be 70% sure it has a layer of white-out under it :3

At my school, white-out is pretty much universally frowned upon :)

Ostensibly, if you use white-out for correction you permanently lose anything you have written unless you have the time/motivation/sanity to sit at your piece of work and scratch it off with something (i.e. a key, where you'll probably ruin your work as well /nightmare).

If I learnt anything from VCE English, it's that you chop and change essays based on previous ideas at various stages of critique by your teacher. Pretty much, I could (neatly!) cross out a whole paragraph that I was unhappy with, but seeing as it was still legible, my teacher could offer their opinion on the validity/placement of that paragraph or the idea therein.

English aside, white-out has no place in maths or sciences whatsoever.

Verdict: Crossing-out is superior.

Well, I wouldn't really say it has no place whatsoever - that's a pretty strong assumption. I mean, someone could well and truly be using white-out this very moment to cover a number in chemistry or maths or whatever in the event that they used pen to calculate something. Therefore, whiteout does have a place (however marginal) in maths or science based subjects.

Pencil master race!

Haha - I guess if you're using pencil then there's no real need for whiteout because an eraser would suffice :P

Moral of the story; use a pencil :P

And even in the situation you've given, a nice, neat line through an incorrect equation looks much better than the glaring white of the white-out, no?

"glaring white" - LOL  :D Yeah I suppose, but that's if you're trying to conceal a vast amount of working. I still reckon white-out would look neater if you were trying to cover the number "3" with "5" for example.  :)

First day of first 3/4 class ever, last year.

Now picture that on an essay I'd been working on for the greater part of the summer holidays.

Nope.

Most teachers strongly suggest you cross out rather than white out too! so no white-out for year 12 would be what I'd recommend :D

Throughout the year for english everyone in the class (including me) just typed up essays so there was never any need for whiteout. During SACs crossing out is always better anyway. I found actually writing over the whiteout looks terrible and if you aren't writing over it's best to cross it out anyway!
