How many words do you generally write for LA? I write around 1000-ish? I was thinking of maybe actually cutting down my words to 800 words where I could finish really easily in 45 mins.

1000 is completely unnecessary. Aim for 700-800, they advise students to only analyse the most complex parts of the article and to keep it short. That way you'll save heaps of time as well.

You're actually better to analyse the hell out of smaller details of language (e.g. structure of the article, sequencing of images etc) if you can, because it shows the examiner a deeper understanding of how language is used to position the readers. So for that reason, 1000 words is a lot to write. You could easily write 3-4 pages (medium handwriting) and score a 10

This thread really has turned into an English thread! I'm guessing this occurs for every close exam? :P

Yeah and last year you only needed a 24 from each assessor to get an A+ so I wouldn't be worrying too much :P

Is this a 24 overall out of 30 ? Or out of 60 ?
2014: VCE
2015: Bachelor of Nutrition Science @ Monash University

Well last year a 47/60 was needed to get an A+ so technically 23.5/24 from each assessor.

After reading the past papers, I am seriously not looking forward to language analysis. Seriously, these must be the most boring and least passionate pieces I have ever seen.

In a nutshell:
"We need to make gardens and eat vegetables" - 2013
"We need to read books" - 2012
"We need to preserve trees" - 2010
"We need to use technology" - 2009

Hmm I'm sensing a knowledge/environment alternating pattern emerging. I put ten cents on this year's LA being something to do with the internet/intellectual property/dangers of technological revolution. Taking bets on alternative predictions.

2013- Global Politics 47

I do that in the 1000-ish words that I write, but I definitely would like to finish the essay with time left to complete context and TR. So, I mean do you have an agenda to write 700-800 words for LA. I feel like there is SO much I want to analyse, but cannot in 700-800 words. I really concentrate on connotations, dichotomies, associations, creating images in the reader's mind, etc... are they worthy of analysis in the bulk of my essay?

I mean, I could discuss 2 main bits of analyses per body paragraph, and get a three body paragraph essay + intro and conclusion, which'll get to about 800-900 words.

Any tips/suggestions? I'll then implement these in the LA essays that I'm going to do tomorrow.

Meh, in year eleven I was doing fine without much work but now there's a lot to do. Especially for the exam, I mean I know you generally need to do the same in year eleven but there isn't the pressure to do well. Even after a year of living overseas I find the context difficult (essentially the task that is actually based on real life and experience) and that has nothing to do with how well I can 'write'. The other thing I've found is that the decisions the school makes can be infuriating/limiting... in year eleven (at least at our school) each class did a different text/expository whereas in year twelve the school as a whole decides on the texts and the context. As our school is generally under-performing ('just above the state average', apparently) they've chosen relatively 'easy' texts. I'd probably even be tempted to say that it's easier to do well in year twelve with 80% hard work/20% talent (as opposed to 80% talent/20% hard work).

I don't know about the exam. It's so subjective that it's impossible to say. If anything, take me as an example; I've worked my ass off this year, had a year away which has increased my maturity/critical thinking skills and have a natural ability in English yet I'm still doubting that I can get over 40.

Are you analysing holistically? I find that most articles can be split into 3-4 main arguments that then become my paragraphs (graphic analysis included in each, where appropriate). If you haven't done last year's LA, do it tomorrow in an hour, aiming for 700-800 words because it's very possible (again I know 2-3 people who got 10s with only four exam booklet pages). I guess another thing to try would be identifying all of the more advanced techniques, and if they are repeated later simply mention them in one sentence ("___ again belittles those who oppose ___ in referring to ___ as ___"/whatever) and then move on.

Nope, I don't. I think if you have a really good teacher (and there are even other good english teachers/english students at your school) you can work really closely with them the whole year and score well.

You've got to remember that having a tutor doesn't necessarily mean you'll get better marks. Think about the reason you want a tutor. If it's to work towards getting say an 8 on every section on the exam, there's no reason why you can't achieve this just by getting your teacher to mark lots of your work and you taking on their feedback. If you're struggling with the text/writing, then a tutor may be good to help you develop your ideas more slowly than what can be achieved in class.

The 2012 LA was possibly the shittest article I have ever come across. Hopefully the adrenaline rush during the actual exam will help me read the article without falling asleep :P
