yeah psyxwar, he only takes kids with either a High Distinction or higher in The Australian Maths Competition or other various competitions, or get >40% on his test, as you would know. But if you actually go, you will see that the standards of some people are very high, <smart guy from our year> got bottom 20% in the exam, and of course you know of his abilities.

I do practice exams to improve my phrasing for questions, because most companies provide a solutions sheet with their model solutions.
Anyway, I seem to remember _yellow saying that he did practice exams before school had even started.

And yellow got a 50 in bio so doing practice exams that early worked out for him.

No discussion of other students without their consent.

Cheers.

I wouldn't call that "best of the best", I got 3 Prizes in the AMC and I would never think I was in the "best of the best" of the state at Maths :P

interesting, would you call someone who got a 50 in methods and spesh but Credits in the AMC the best in the state? or is that title reserved for geniuses like Derrick Ha
2012-2013: VCE, Melbourne High School

"Best of the best" is people who can do well in the non-multi-choice comps, things like the Olympiad, Tournament of Towns, etc. Being a great mathematician is so much more than just being really careful and getting 50s in VCE (imo). Plus, you can "learn" how to get a 50 in VCE, but "learning" how to do real maths requires a lot more talent and skill.

So yeah, I'm talking the likes of Derrick Ha and an MGS grad of 2011 who was at his level (if not higher) too without doubt.

Has anyone gotten premiers in methods and spesh?

Yeah

I know kids who have gotten a Prize for every Australian Maths Competition they have done so far  (5) getting some of the lowest marks in the class. Most of the the kids in the Dr He. classes are quite talented at maths, so even if they are not the "best of the best" they would be considered some of the best in the state.
Also, I think that you have prejudices from going to Melbourne High, where I would say most people would be considered "the best" in the state, cause if they went to public schools, they would probably be the best at their respective schools.

Yeah

Yeah, an anecdote that Dr. He loves to give is that, a few years ago, there was a kid who was a member of the International Math Olympiad Team for Australia, for in both his Yr 11 and 12 years, and received Bronze and Silver medals in the two years respectively, who ended up getting a 41 in Math Methods.

So yeah, VCE is not always a great measure of how good you really are at maths.

I think that at this stage, practice exams are still too early. However, exposing yourself to questions/practice exam questions relating to a particular topic you study will really help you in your expression, and practice makes perfect. I'll be doing Unit 3 Practice Exams for Bio at around mid-year, and I'll be then doing unit 3+4 exams at the end of the year. Further Maths is a bit different because conveniently, its divided into each module, so as I finish the module, I do about 2 exam 1s and 2 exam 2s, and so I've gotten a little hint of the structure/types of questions asked.

But I mean you can always spend time (now) really consolidating that information and ensuring that you don't depend on just types of questions in the exam. Finish off each topic knowing you have completely consolidated it to the best of your ability, before you start doing practice exam questions/diagnostic tests.
