Just to confirm about VTAC preferences....

1) So, when one receives an offer say in Round 1, this can be from any course ranked 1 - 12? When one acquires this offer, is their a delay between course rank 1 and course rank 12 if this is hypothetically situated in round 1? Also, with the offers that are denied and/or approved are these indicated also?

2) If I do not reach the 25+ study score for Maths but acquire a higher ATAR than required, does this just go down what you have been approved for via ranking preferences? E.g. some business courses I have like from 3-6 and Arts which doesn't require a Maths study score in Year 12, which is 7th? Is their a delay? E.g. I don't want that delay, it would make me feel like I have badly failed Year 12... I will adjust my preferences accordingly if this is the case.

3) Do I have to submit my VTAC preferences by myself or in consultation with my careers mentor?

4) I also have to submit a SEAS application. Does this have to go in-conjunction with the VTAC preferences?

So nervous, I want to get this organised and out of the way as quickly as possible so I can concentrate on my study commitments ASAP. I have in excess of 25 courses, I just need to organise them from about 1 - 12 in ranking order.

Would anyone be willing to critique my preferences? Unfortunately I did not bring my careers folder with me, due to my excessively heavy bag! As they stand at the moment ('off the top of my head':

1) Arts - Melb. Uni

2) Professional Communication - RMIT

3) Journalism/Business - Monash

4) Arts/Secondary Education (Honours) - Monash

5) Arts/Marketing - Monash

6) Arts/Business - Monash

Does anyone know the difference between Business and Marketing?

7) Arts - Monash

8) Communication/Business - Swinburne

9) Arts/Commerce - Deakin

10) Professional and Creative Writing - Deakin

11 Arts - Deakin

12) Creative Writing - RMIT

1. Yes, the offer you receive is from the course highest in your preferences to which you are eligible. As far as I know all the offers come out at the same time as VTAC works them out before the day they are released.

2. You wouldn't receive an offer for the subjects which required the prereq. However again, there wouldn't be a delay based on the fact one course was lower. Not all offers come out of the same time though, they come out progressively the day the offers are released I believe, so regardless some courses would be "delayed" and some would be "early" relatively.

3. There would be an online portal. The method you chose to fill it out is up to you. Most students would probably sit with a careers counsellor, and that's probably a smart thing to do. It would be your account so you could change preferences at any time the system is open though without any other assistance.

4. SEAS applications close sometimes around early October I believe, and you can submit it any time from getting a VTAC account to this closing date. I suggest you get onto SEAS asap after setting up an account with VTAC just so you don't forget about it.

It's difficult to critique your choices without knowing your interests etc. so that's probably a thing to work with your careers counsellor about.

The difference between B.Bus and Marketing at Monash is the fact that B.Bus allows you to chose from a  wide range of majors, including marketing. While marketing your major is already decided. The benefit of the marketing course is that you can include marketing directly on your resume while the business course would be "Bachelor of business- Major in marketing" on your resume. Both b.bus and marketing students would do the exact same units alongside each other so if you aren't 110% sure which major in business you want, go for B.Bus. (I know the difference because my dad completed both of these courses-albeit before monash uni was even called monash uni).

Awesome, thanks so much for the distinction b/w B.Bus & Marketing and the general advice :)

Yeah, my careers counsellor told me that I don't have to worry about the SEAS process and that she would remind me when I had to do it and apparently I have to do it with her or something. I have the documentation set up, I don't really know what it involves as I have been so pedantic about my studies recently and setting myself up as best as possible. E.g. whether that is a 50 or 70 ATAR (who knows?). Apparently it is not an arduous process though. I have sent an email to my careers counsellor just to keep her alert about my course selection + seas application. All this is sooo confusing, on top of trying to prepare adequately and thoroughly for upcoming SACs.

I'm with you on this. Seriously finding it difficult to manage career options or UMAT preparation with upcoming SACs being on my mind ugh

You don't have to do the application with the careers counsellor. And yeh it's not really worth being concerned about yet as there's plenty of time and it sounds like you're all set with the documentation. I still need to my documentation done. It's all pretty easy, basically an online application, you say what you're applying for and then it tells you what documentation you need and you have a few options of how to get those documents to them, like you can upload, mail, fax etc. So not worth worrying about.

Oh ok, yeah I'll probably just do it with my careers counsellor then. At the moment I am compiling a Microsoft Word Doc. for my top 12 courses and application of categories for SEAS so I can send this to my careers counsellor

I'm pretty sure i know the answer, just to double check, it is irrelevant when you get in your scholarship applications / preferences, as long as it is within the given time bracket? Correct?

Apparently if I choose a Business degree you also have to do an accounting unit? Since I am literally incompetent at Mathematics, and bear no real interest in accounting, should I perhaps lend myself towards the Management and Marketing sectors? E.g. the advertising side and using my creative talents to the best of my ability really appeals to me in a Business sense. Can anyone distinguish between the two please?

Thank you!

The following attachment are my top 12 course selections at the moment.

I am grossly disorganised given that I have changed a few of my ranking orders in that 7 to about 12 bracket, in the space of 1 hour!

However, I am reasonably confident as they cover ATARs which are ambitious, reasonable and contain more than a few courses of the lower end in case the tsunami hits during Year 12, i.e. the exams, nerves etc...

I have been working on this since late last year.

Any critique, e.g. course wise or in terms of how I have ranked certain options would be much appreciated!

Thank you!

It seems as though the Bachelor of Arts/Management course has been seemingly either 1) removed from the database or 2) removed entirely from Monash University as of now?

Accounting isn't really maths at all. Accounting is numbers and for 98% involves nothing more difficult than addition/subtraction/multiplication/division of set formulas.

And yes a b.bus at monash has core first year subjects in just about every major discipline of the degree e.g. one finance, one economics, one marketing unit etc. in first year. Even if you do the B.Bus (marketing) degree at monash you still have to do those core units and I'm pretty sure most other unis would be the same. You just can't call it a B.Bus without teaching at least one unit of accounting as accounting and business are inextricably linked.

What is there to distinguish?

I can't seem to find that course either. If it doesn't exist anymore and you want to do arts/ b.bus management at monash then you would have to do this http://www.monash.edu.au/study/coursefinder/course/4098/ majoring in Management (essentially the same thing as doing the Bachelor of Arts/Management course-only difference is the name).

Thanks for explaining everything and dedicating your time and effort :)

Yeah to be honest I made a massive generalisation about Accounting. Though, I remember asking a friend who does Year 12 Accounting, and I asked whether it was "maths related" and he just replied and echoed "yeah, definitely."

I have attached my updated preferences... With relevant ATAR requirements, I am fairly certain that this will not change.

It feels so weird to be on the other side of these things. Like last year I was the one filling out the forms and asking people questions about the subjects, now others are the one filling out the forms and asking me the questions. Not a big deal but just interesting how things can change over a pretty small period of time.

Some goes for uni preferences with uni students and yr 12's I suppose.

Definitely feeling this. I was talking to a year 11 today in first aid (whoops, don't do folios kids) and she was asking me so many questions. Except I'm definitely feeling the frustration as none of them will listen to me if I tell them doing 4 content heavy subjects of 3 folios is a BAD IDEA NO.

(I'm helping out at the VCE expo this week too, so man, I'll be fielding all the questions)
