Doing more than 6 subjects is pointless in my opinion. What's the point of studying for an extra two subjects that wont even count towards your ATAR?

I think it's a decent security if you screw up on one subject. For example, I wasn't too happy with my legal studies result, so a seventh subject of further maths could have replaced that.

That being said, it's only ten percent for the last two subjects, probably so you DO have room for a couple of screw ups.
Year 12 VCE Studies:
2012: Legal Studies [36]
2013: Physics [38], Maths Methods [40], English [38]
2014: Chemistry [37], Specialist Maths [40]

2014 ATAR: 97.40

2015:
Here we come Mechanical Systems Major.

Some schools (eg. mine) also force a certain subject onto everyone. So if you're not a fan of that, you're most likely gonna do work, and so people do 7 subjects sometimes.

8 was new to me though. But I guess with VCE in 3 years its manageable.

LOL, I'm actually really dumb :p

I agree- however my school says that I'm not allowed to do less than 4 subjects in a year or else I'm a 'part time' student. So doing 4 is compulsory for me in year 12. Next year I'm tackling 3 3/4s and 2 1/2s... Don't how that's going to work out.

I was going to do four this year, but I was informed by many of you on this forum - in a thread that got me to -6 respect - that taking more than six subjects was unwise. I settled for just the six subjects but looking back, I wish I had taken further maths.
Wow- really? I guess it seems useless. But then again I'm not doing VCE just for the sake of a high ATAR. I actually value education and learning (i think some people forget about that)

The problem I have with taking more than 6 subjects is that it could potentially overwhelm you which could impact more than that one extra subject you took.

True. Although, I can only choose between taking 7 or 8 subjects. If I take it year by year it's manageable. At the end of the day, it's really up to the individual (e.g. how they study/manage time)

I have an option of doing 2 3/4s + 3 1/2s or 3 3/4s and 2 1/2s
(keeping in mind one of the 3/4s is PE- which I think I naturally excel at)

what would everyone else do?

Im really hesitant on taking PE in VCE knowing that all the kids from my school who don't give a stuff about their education end up taking PE. Which means I'll have a bad cohort and have to learn in possibly a toxic environment.

Yeah I totally understand where you are coming from. However, if you really like the subject a 'bad' cohort and a potentially toxic environment shouldn't stop you from taking it. I think it's definitely possible to do well in a subject with lower achieving peers... But i guess i wouldn't be able to fully understand your position as most classes in my school have supportive teaching environments.

In addition to getting my ATAR score, i'm mildly interested to know how I performed on the GAT even though it's not really worth anything, is it just me? Haha

YES! Last year I got told by my ass. principal that I had one of the best gat scores they'd ever seen  ;D Didn't quite translate to my study scores though.

More knowledge, ability to pursue different interests and find out what you are good at. Not everything is about an ATAR. I'm so glad I did seven subjects!!

But wouldn't you use university to broaden your knowledge? I agree, it's definitely not all about ATAR, but would you rather not devote time to 4 subjects in year 12 than 5, given that one of your subjects wont even count to your ATAR? I don't know, everyone is entitled to their own opinion regarding this matter, I just don't really get it.

Not to the extent that I wanted to. I'm a humanities/science person and used VCE to decide which direction to go in because a double degree isn't an option. Also, it meant that if I messed up in an exam it wouldn't affect me and let me continue a subject I didn't excel at but enjoyed. I didn't go into VCE with the intention of getting the highest ATAR, just the knowledge that I love learning. 4 subjects would have been easier but I think I would have been bored.
