I might try that then. I could do with the help.
Nowhere is hiring, and it is driving me to distraction. These are the days I wish I was made of stone -.-

Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated :)

Anna have you tried fast food places? Maccas/Hungry Jacks/KFC is always hiring and they don't require experience no matter your age, as long as you're available, even for overnights perhaps? I know fast food is unappealing but the experience you get is valuable, I stayed at Maccas for a year before getting a better job, and then getting another better job, etc. It's a great job to start with.

I have not and I don't plan to. I'm vegetarian and most fast food places serve meat so that's why. I just feel really uncomfortable handling food in general, especially meat. Thanks for the tip though !

I'm not a 2014er but I hope you don't mind if I jump on this thread :)
I currently work at fast food (and I don't like it), but here we literally don't hire anyone 16 or older (because more expensive), unless you're a male who's willing to cook, or you can work day shifts! (sorry if that makes you feel worse)

Like you, Anna, I've also applied for like 30 places this week and I cannot find anywhere although I'm only 16 :'(

This life sucks because at the age of 16 I'm not even getting many shifts anymore
and I can't find another job :(

That's fair enough. I think your best bet would be volunteering to add something to your resume!  :)

Fast food places usually hire 18+ year olds with no experience for the sake of having someone work during school hours, overnights, etc.
Anyway, you're 16, still young, so don't worry too much about finding another job! Around this time most places have already hired so wait until next year, for the mean time, stay in fast food. That's what I did, I waited around applying regularly and then finally got out of fast food shithole  :P  That's the path that most people take from their first job. And if you aren't getting shifts, call in and ask the rostering manager for more - it'll show that you're keen and reminds them that you work there.

Yep, unfortunately it's an extremely competitive time of the year. Everyone finishes school at the same time and a large bunch of the people would like to earn some money over the break. It's also tougher for us Class of 2014 because, as strawberries said, we are simply more expensive. For most retail jobs, a 15 year old could do the exact same work that we do for $3-6 per hour cheaper. I worked from Year 10-12 but throughout Year 12 (this year) my shifts slowly decreased, and I imagine less were given to me and more to the newer younger employees.

Anyway, as others have suggested, it's definitely worthwhile getting some sort of volunteer experience to try separate yourself from the crowd. Maybe even spicing up your resume could help out, as that's the first thing a potential employer will see with details about you and one which stands out could help out.

Hey guys! Long time no talk, just got back from schoolies and was pretty hectic.

Anyway just need some advice about where I should post about some queuries I have about uni/courses. I'm evaluating a lot of options still and I can't post it in one universities dedicated forum because it could potentially include a few - aswell as considering both science/commerce so I can't post it in one of the dedicated forums. Blegh haha where should I post?

I went to KFC and applied for a job and the manager said they want someone who will defer their uni studies and my mum was there. She got so pissed. Honestly, I do not like fast food chains.

my mum was there
that was mistake number 1
if you are applying for a job that you arent getting through family connections, you need to go by yourself
if you dont its showing them that you are still dependent on your parents and wont be able to function independently as a cog in the machine which most jobs for teenagers are, plus it makes you look immature and as if you will complain to your parents when you have a bad day, and it shows that you cant fend for yourself and need a comforting figure nearby to deal with stressful situations, which is not what you want to portray in a customer service role where you can get volatile customers at times

How is everyone enjoying holidays?

I have a friend who is going to second schoolies this week - PARTY hard!

I've found so far this period of time has been amazing in terms of catching up with friends and re-establishing friendships that were often hard to maintain in the hectic life of year 12.

Do it anyway.
Be uncomfortable, that's where you get new experiences from. You'll get to explore a whole new place, meet new people, do new things.
Screw scary, scary is the mind stopping itself from stepping outside the comfort zone. Outside the comfort zone is where the fun happens.
