From memory, I think they are from a lower class in India, so I doubt they will have money to get away

Oh, fair enough.

Lanka is similar. Politicians and their families get away with rape and murder there as well.

Lifetime in jail would be a lot better. Jail inmates won't be nice to them for such a foul crime.

Police are confirmed to be seeking for the death penalty.. This is certainly positive progress.

http://www.hindustantimes.com/News-Feed/Chunk-HT-UI-IndiaSectionPage-DelhiGangrape/Delhi-gangrape-Draft-chargesheet-finalised-police-to-cite-30-witnesses/Article1-983139.aspx

Quote
Investigators said they will seek death penalty for the accused in the case.

All the six accused, including the juvenile, had initially been booked for common intention (Section 34 IPC), dacoity (397 IPC), gangrape (376 [G] IPC) and attempt to murder (307 IPC).

The police claimed to have a water-tight case and with the addition of murder as a charge, they will now be in a relatively comfortable position to push for a death penalty.

I oppose the death penalty in all non-wartime circumstances, so don't really see it as a positive development - I am happy though there will be a strong prosecution.

Also, I can't help but have mixed feelings about the publicity this case is gaining, knowing that rape is a global epidemic. It is definitely a good thing that this case is drawing the attention it is, and hopefully it will serve as a deterrent. However, since this case, thousands of other women have most likely been raped in India. I feel like it won't be of any aid to the many persons (male and female) whom have been and will be raped in the future, as unfortunately, that is a certainty.

I agree with what your saying for the most part. But the mere fact that we're better off now than before, so I see that as a good thing. As long as it stops even a single occurrence, I'm very happy about this. I honestly did not think it would come to this level but it's great it has. What you say may be true, 1000 more may have been raped now, however I think now, they're putting more fear into those responsible so hopefully this number will reduce. One day I wish it would stop completely. But I don't know if I'll live to see the day though :(

The protests are crazy atm apparently.!

Having a death penalty for those abrupt idiots is all the government can do; for the victims family and her well-wishers. It'll give a sign to the rest of those with the same mindset as those idiots.

The protesting is crazy right now...

The death penalty is the best way to punish these idiots. It gives the victim closure and assurance that she/he would never have to face them again.
And it is a great deterrence. No one wants to die.

Yes. Protesting is crazy atm , maybe because of the extent to which the rapists went to !
But according to statistics ,  every 20minutes there is a rape in the capital city . :( Shocking statistic ! Something has to be done, the politicians of India, including Sheila Dixit( apparently she was kicked out of a protest...LOL)  , are eating money from tax payers in India and are doing nothing about these atrocious crimes that are occurring.

I only heard some stuff on Facebook, but I'm not sure if it's true.. Did they use a crow bar and tear through into her intestines. Or is that some rubbish circulating around? :(

that was the report in the media, pretty sure its true.
and this sort of crime has been happening for a long time and quite frequently in India,
somehow this time it just sparked the attention of the media.

no one said anything in 84.

edit, or anything before this event.

punishment wise...
someone should screw em up with a crowbar the same way they did to the girl.

I know! But nowadays , due to the awareness ( due to media , ie. Satyamev Jayate --amazing show ) , people are more wary of it happening. I guess , in previous generations , females were seen as "things ", whose lives you play with and throw them away , rather than humans.

But it is really sad that this is happening to an educated women ( apparently she was a doctor) . You would think that this would happen to someone in regional descent.

Death penalty for raping and murdering ONE person? Are you guys serious? I wouldn't give someone the death penalty for raping and murdering 100 people, let alone 1 person.

They deserve the standard punishment that any rapist + murderer gets, which is around 25 years in jail (but varies quite a bit). I don't see why this case should be treated any differently. People are just getting too emotional.

The only way to make amends to this situation is to help the victims family out by giving them financial restoration through a "victims of crime" court (or whatever it's called in India). Also, give free counseling to witnesses, close friends and family of the victim.
