Melb Science (Computing) vs. UQ Commerce/IT

Hi guys, I need some advice on course selection. Currently, I've narrowed down my preferences to two courses: Science Major in Computing and Software Systems at Melbourne University and Commerce & IT at Queensland University. My preferred course is the double degree but I am based in Melbourne so interstating would be a pain. (Monash doesn't have Com/IT :( )

If I go with Science at Melbourne, I guess I could do a graduate diploma of Commerce after if I really wanted to. But it seems a stupid yea? Same 4 years. Not even a bachelor degree lol.

Also, is a double degree just as good as a single degree in terms of the amount of knowledge you learn and in the eyes of employers? Do most people who have a double degree just end up specialising in one area or actually utilize both?

There's a trade-off. With a double degree, chances are the pure IT & Comm students have greater knowledge in their respective fields. e.g. the student with the single IT degree perhaps took more specialist programming/networking classes. If you were to apply for a programming position after graduating, the employer may be inclined to hire the person who possesses greater depth of knowledge (based on what they learnt throughout their degree).

Depends on the combination of degrees & what sort of career you're after. In some cases (e.g. aero eng / science) for example, the majors complement each other. This is clearly useful. How do you plan to use your commerce degree in relation to IT? Or are you trying to keep your options open?
