I have no idea how Uni works

Can someone explain to me how the system is at uni?
I want to do Engineering and commerce next this year(hoping to become a civil engineer), but know nothing about what subjects i should pick and how many subjects etc
actually i pretty much am clueless about it all right now

Also note that ENG1020 - Engineering Structures is the first year unit relating to civil engineering so it's advised you do that unit.

Also you'll have to do PHS1080 - Foundation physics as you didn't study physics in VCE.

Basically a normal semseter load is 4 units, each worth 6 credit points, so that is 24 credit points a semseter, which is 48 credit points a year.

Not exactly sure about the commerce side of things, Taiga or someone would probably know more about the majors and such for that but in that link it does list the compulsory units for the commerce side of things., and then scroll down for the relevant engineering path you want to take.

After offers and such there is an info session day thing that you can go to and sit in a lecture and they tell you about your course, in regards to certain units and such.

The system works like this:
1. Pick units
2. Go to classes, pass unit
3. Repeat 1-2
4. Once you have enough units, you go to the faculty office and say "I want to finish now"

So, it's up to you to pick the correct units to meet the course requirements (read the handbook entry in detail, make sure you satisfy all the requirements). Also, it's up to you to confirm with the faculty office to make sure you are choosing the right units in compliance with the outline.

So, read that handbook outline, then visit the faculty office.

Also, an excel spreadsheet would be very helpful. You should have a rough plan for your degree (for all the semesters), and modify that plan as you go. See attached for an example.

Read the handbook entry. It'll tell you what subjects are 'fixed' in terms of time (e.g. CIV2206 happens in second year), what subjects are flexible in terms of years (e.g. commerce subjects don't have specified years), and what your elective options are. Use a spreadsheet.

first year - for all engineering branches of study, students must complete six units (36 points) of engineering:

That is, you do six engineering units and two commerce units in first year (three eng, one com per sem).

Second year I'm pretty sure you do four engineering and four commerce and the engineering units have to be CIV2206 Mechanics of solids, CIV2226 Design of concrete and masonry structures, CIV2242 Introductory geoengineering and ENG2091 Advanced engineering mathematics A (given you choose civil)

So, at the end of second year you will have completed 10 engineering units (6 first year and 4 second year) and 6 commerce units (Most likely the 6 core compulsory commerce units: AFC1000 Principles of accounting and finance, BTC1110 Business law, ECC1000 Principles of microeconomics, ETC1000 Business and economic statistics, MGC1010 Introduction to management, MKC1200 Principles of marketing)

Try and give the course handbook posted above a good read, it's very helpful.

Yeah pretty much what the answers above have said.

You do 4 Units per semester (though some ppl can overload and do 5 if they want to graduate quicker)
Each unit has lectures and tutorials. Think of tutorials as your average yr 12 class, where the tutor explains concepts from lectures, and class interacts etc.. Some units have more than one lecture. And lectures range from 1hr, 1.5 to 2hrs etc...
